Macon Knights News Release

MACON, Ga. – The Macon Knights announced today that Mario Evans has signed a contract with the New Orleans VooDoo of the Arena Football League. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. While the Knights lose Evans, the team has been assigned Shannon Gainey and Kevin Rivers.

Gainey, a wide receiver/defensive back, has one year or experience in arenafootball2 while Rivers, an offensive/defensive lineman, is a rookie.

Evans, a fullback/linebacker, becomes the eighth player from the 2003 Knights roster to sign with the VooDoo. Evans played sparingly during the 2002 season, but played a major role in the Knights’ 2003 American Conference Championship season. Evans scored a touchdown and came up with the game-saving tackle against the Tennessee Valley Vipers in the 2003 American Conference Championship game.

Evans (6-1, 250, Western Michigan) played in 14 games last year for the Knights. He rushed 20 times for 48 yards and two touchdowns. Evans caught two passes for 23 yards and one touchdown. On defense, he recorded 16.5 tackles, three tackles for a loss, two sacks, one interception, two pass breakups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Gainey (6-1, 195, Livingstone) comes to the Knights after playing five games for the Greensboro Prowlers last season. He caught 11 passes for 159 yards and four touchdowns. During his senior season in college, Gainey led his team in receiving yards (644) and in total yards (1,173).

Rivers (6-3, 315, South Carolina) enters his first season in af2. Rivers was an offensive tackle for the Gamecocks from 1998 to 2001. Rivers becomes the first player on the Knights roster that head coach Mike Hold has picked up from his alma mater.

The Macon Knights – 2003 American Conference Champions – will begin their fourth season of play next spring and are looking to make the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. Season tickets are on sale now for as low as $48. For more information, or to purchase season tickets, call the Knights office at (478) 314-3000 or visit www.maconknights.com.
