Errors help Pawtucket to 9-8 Victory

Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- Throughout their first 46 games, the Indianapolis Indians built the best record in the International League on a foundation of excellent pitching and solid defense.

But on Tuesday, the Indians crumbled and the Pawtucket Red Sox capitalized, taking advantage of five errors to open a sizable lead, before surviving with a 9-8 victory before 5,852 in their series finale at McCoy Stadium.

The breakdown by Indianapolis, which included three errors -- all throwing -- by catcher Tony Sanchez, allowed a total of five unearned runs. To their credit, the PawSox made the most of their six hits, benefiting from seven walks and recording four stolen bases.

In doing so, Pawtucket salvaged a split of the four-game series and eight-day homestand, while improving to 27-19 overall. The Indians lost for just the 15th time, opposite 32 wins.

Trailing by a 3-1 score, the PawSox pared the difference to a run when Bryce Brentz, who had an RBI single his first at-bat, led off the bottom of the fourth with his eighth homer.

The next inning, Indianapolis starter Andy Oliver (W, 3-2), who entered among the league leaders in several categories, including ERA (2.61) and strikeouts (54), issued an IL-high 38th base on base to leadoff batter Brock Holt.

By the time Oliver retired the eighth and final batter of the frame, Pawtucket scored four runs on two hits, doubles by Alberto Rosario and Ronald Bermudez. Drew Sutton also contributed an RBI with a safety-squeeze, sacrifice bunt.

Jerry Sands answered with his third home run of the series in the top of sixth, drawing the Indians within 6-4.

Another eight-batter uprising, in a three-run seventh inning, expanded the PawSox advantage to 9-4. Reliever Duke Welker walked the first two batters, Jonathan Diaz and Drew Sutton, who scored on an error and RBI single by Ryan Dent, respectively.

Undeterred, Indianapolis drew closer on Sanchez's two-run homer facing Graham Godfrey in the top of the eighth and another two-run blast by Jared Goedert off Anthony Carter in the ninth inning.

Carter (S, 6), bidding for a two-inning save, hit Sanchez with a two-out, two-strike offering, before ending the game by inducing a long fly out by Sands to center fielder Ronald Bermudez.

The victory was credited to reliever Pedro Beato (W, 3-1), who logged 2 1/3 innings, before being ejected by home plate umpire Will Little. Without warning or apparent provocation, Little ruled that Beato threw intentionally at Josh Harrison with one out in the seventh inning.

An irate Pawtucket manager Gary DiSarcina was also thrown out by Little, as was reserve Brandon Snyder, who'd been hit by two pitches earlier in the series.

The PawSox are idle on Wednesday and are scheduled to commence an eight-game trip at Louisville at 6:35 p.m. on Thursday. Alfredo Aceves (2-1, 3.13) is expected to start the series opener vs. Tony Cingrani (1-0, 0.00).
