Visalia Rawhide News Release

VISALIA, CA - The Visalia Rawhide (84-60, 3-1) committed their fourth error in the top of the eleventh inning allowing the High Desert Mavericks (86-60, 4-1) to plate the eventual game winning run and hold on for a 5-4 victory to take a 1-0 series lead on Thursday night at Recreation Ballpark.

In the top of the eleventh with runners on first and third for High Desert and RHP Nick Baker (4-2, 0-1) on the mound, C Jose Trevino hit a hard ground ball to the 3B Ramon Hernandez who had the ball slip through his legs for an error, his third of the game, and allow RF Luke Tendler to score the eventual game winning run.

The Rawhide had their backs against the wall heading to the bottom of the ninth trailing 4-3 when 2B Fernery Ozuna blasted a solo home run over the left-center field wall to tie the contest 4-4 and send game one of the California League Championship Series to extra innings.

High Desert jumped on Rawhide starter LHP Alex Young in the top of the first when leadoff man LF Scott Heineman singled. Two batters later with two outs, Trevino hammered a ball that bounced off the Kirby Pucket sign in left field for a two-run home run and a 2-0 Mavericks lead.

RHP Adam Quintana pitched a scoreless first inning but with one out in the bottom of the second walked RF Robelys Reyes. 1B Austin Byler followed with a single and Hernandez laced a two-run double into the gap that tied the game 2-2.

In what proved to be Young's final inning, the fifth, High Desert reclaimed the lead when 3B Josh Morgan reached on an error charged to Hernandez. After a sacrifice bunt Heineman brought home Morgan with an RBI single and then Trevino struck again, bringing home Heineman for the 4-2 Mavs lead.

Young pitched five innings and allowed eight hits and four runs (two earned), he didn't walk anyone and struck out four.

The game remained at 4-2 High Desert until the seventh when CF Colin Bray took RHP Shane McCain deep to make it 4-3 until the ninth inning and the Ozuna magic that sent the ballgame to extras.

RHP Cody Palmquist (5-2, 1-0), despite giving up the tying run and blowing a save, earned the win for his two innings of work. He allowed two hits, the one run and he struck out two.

RHP Nick Gardewine (SV: 8, 3) pitched a scoreless eleventh inning to earn the save in game of the championship series.

High Desert has a 1-0 series lead with game two tomorrow night at Recreation Ballpark. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. for the 7:00 p.m. first pitch and Visalia sends RHP Justin Donatella (6-4, 1-0) to the mound against LHP Brett Martin (2-1, 0-0) for the Mavericks. For the final home game of the 2016 season there will be postgame fireworks.
