Stockton Ports News Release

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Stockton Ports suffered their fourth straight loss on Wednesday night and a sixth-inning error proved very costly. In a scoreless game, Ports third baseman Jose Brizuela bobbled and then threw away a potential inning-ending double-play ball that resulted in three unearned runs as the San Jose Giants rode the miscue to a third straight victory.

Stockton saw an opportunity fall by the wayside in the first when Tyler Marincov hit into an inning-ending double-play with runners at the corners and one out. The Giants saw a similar opportunity go by in the bottom of the first as Ports starter Casey Meisner (0-2) walked the first three batters he faced, but a pick-off and a double-play got him out of the jam.

Neither team had scored going into the bottom of the sixth. Meisner issued a one-out walk to C.J Hinojosa and Chris Shaw followed with a single that put runners at first and second. Aramis Garcia came up next and hit a double-play ball to third. Brizuela bobbled the ball, then recovered and tried to throw to first but threw the ball in the dirt and past first baseman Sandber Pimentel, allowing Hinojosa to score and give the Giants a 1-0 lead. After Meisner struck out Steven Duggar, Jose Vizcaino, Jr. delivered a two-run single to right that gave the Giants a 3-0 cushion and knocked Meisner from the game.

Meisner suffered the loss, allowing three unearned runs on four hits in 5.2 innings of work.

Giants starter Jason Forjet (2-1) gave up a one-out home run in the top of the seventh to Seth Brown and then an ensuing single to Mikey White that knocked him from the ballgame. Pat Young came on in relief and threw a wild pitch that allowed White to get to second, and Brizuela delivered an RBI single to right that cut the Giants lead to 3-2.

Forjet earned the win, going 6.1 innings and allowing two runs on four hits while striking out one.

After Kyle Finnegan pitched an inning-and-a-third scoreless in relief of Meisner, Lou Trivino took over in the eighth and gave up a leadoff single to Shaw. Two batters later, Duggar singled to put runners at the corners and Vizcaino followed and drove in his third run of the game with a single to right to give the Giants a 4-2 cushion.

After Reyes Moronta pitched a scoreless eighth, Rodolfo Martinez (SV, 5) needed just five pitches to notch his fifth save of the season as he set the side down in order in the ninth.

The Ports and Giants wrap up their three-game set with day baseball on Thursday morning at Municipal Stadium. In a battle of left-handers, Zack Erwin (0-1, 1.23 ERA) gets the start for Stockton, opposed by Andrew Suarez (1-1, 3.38 ERA) for San Jose. First pitch is set for 11:30 a.m. PDT.
