Erik Condra Named Syracuse Crunch Captain
March 17, 2017 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Syracuse Crunch News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse Crunch have announced that forward Erik Condra has been named captain. Additionally, defenseman Matt Taormina has been named a permanent alternate captain.
"We thought Erik Condra was the perfect candidate," Syracuse Crunch Head Coach Ben Groulx said. "Talking with the players and talking with the coaches, we wanted to name a guy who has experience and has been there in the playoffs. A guy who is well respected in the room and brings that work ethic, composure and poise day in and day out. We thought Erik was that choice."
Condra, 30, is in his first full season with the Crunch and second campaign in the Tampa Bay Lightning organization.
"It's an honor to be a leader and to be looked at from your peers as a leader," Condra said. "We started off with Luke Witkowski and have had so many guys up and down, I think we needed someone to take over the roll and make sure we have a good playoff run. A captain does the right thing on and off the ice. I've been through a lot and being a captain is about keeping your emotions not too high and not too low. It's about calming at the right time and getting excited and pumped up at the right time."
Condra, 5-foot-11, 183 pounds, has played in 42 games with the Crunch, recording 12 goals and 37 points. He is tied for third on the team with three game-winning goals, while his 37 points rank fifth. He netted his first professional hat trick with the Crunch on Feb. 25. Condra has also skated in thirteen games with the Lightning this season.
A native of Trenton, Michigan, Condra has played in 366 career NHL games with the Tampa Bay Lightning and Ottawa Senators recording 39 goals and 98 points with a career plus-18 rating. He has skated in 26 career Stanley Cup Playoffs games earning nine points (3g, 6a). Condra has also appeared in 177 AHL games with the Crunch and Binghamton Senators notching 122 points (40g, 82a) and a plus-27 rating. He was drafted by Ottawa in the seventh round, 211th overall, of the 2006 NHL Draft.
Prior to his professional career, Condra played in 159 games with the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish from 2005 to 2009. He served as alternate captain during his junior season and captain in his senior year. During his college career he registered 48 goals and 158 points. Condra was named to the CCHA Second All-Star Team and to the NCCA West Second All-American Team in 2009 after finishing his collegiate career. He was also named to the CCHA All-Rookie Team in 2006 after posting six goals and 34 points in 36 games.
Condra is the 20th full-time captain in Crunch franchise history and the third since Syracuse affiliated with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2012. He follows Luke Witkowski, who served for the first half of the 2016-17 season before earning a full-time position with the Lightning, and Mike Angelidis, who captained the Crunch from 2012 to 2016.
Syracuse Crunch single game and season tickets for the 2016-17 season are on sale now and can be purchased either in person at the Crunch office located in the War Memorial Arena at 800 S. State St. in Syracuse or by calling the office at 315-473-4444.
