CHARLESTON, S.C., April 4 – Carl English scored 26 points to lead the Charleston Lowgators to an 81-79 National Basketball Development League victory over the Roanoke Dazzle Sunday at the North Charleston Coliseum.

Charleston, which has already secured a berth but hasnÂ’t nailed down a seed in the NBDL Delta Air Lines Postseason Classic, improved to 25-19. Roanoke lost its eighth consecutive game and drops to 20-24, into a tie for fourth place with Fayetteville. Only Asheville (26-18) has secured home court for the Classic.

“I was able to get the first couple of shots to fall and that’s always nice,” English said. “When that happened I started feeling good and getting into a rhythm. I also got some good looks at the basket.”

The rookie from Hawaii came off the Charleston bench to convert 10-of-15 field goal attempts, including 6-of-10 three-point attempts. He also collected eight rebounds and had two assists.

“Carl was the difference today. It was nice to see him get in a catch-and-shoot rhythm,” Charleston head coach Doug Marty said. “We are slowly learning how to share the basketball and that is the key to any success we have.”

The Lowgators must have found whatever shooting success Roanoke has lost during its current losing streak. The Dazzle has been plagued by the inability to hit open shots during the skid and in fact had an opportunity to send the game into overtime, but Marque PerryÂ’s 6-foot baseline jumper with 3.2 seconds to play missed the mark.

“When you are in a funk like we are that’s the way things seem to always happen,” Dazzle head coach Kent Davison said. “We may have played as well defensively as we have played in a long time, but again, we just couldn’t get shots to fall when we needed them and Charleston did.”

Roanoke led 43-42 at the half, but converted just 15-of-29 free throw attempts and failed to make a three-pointer in the game. The Lowgators were 8-of-13 from behind the arc and outrebounded the Dazzle 47-38.

League most valuable player Tierre Brown was the only other Charleston player in double figures with 20 points. NBDL defensive player of the year Karim Shabazz collected 15 rebounds for the Lowgators.

All-NBDL forward Josh Asselin scored 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Roanoke. Marque Perry, also a first team All-NBDL choice, chipped in 11.

Charleston is host to Huntsville Friday, while Roanoke entertains Fayetteville. Both games have postseason implications. The Dazzle and Patriots are tied for the fourth and final postseason spot. Pending the outcome of the final two games of the season, Charleston could end up with anything from a regular season championship to a third seed.
