Elliott, Swamp Bats Shut Down Mountaineers

July 14, 2017 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Vermont Mountaineers News Release

KEENE, N.H. - Keene Swamp Bats starting pitcher Tim Elliott (Loganville, Ga./Georgia) picked up his league-leading fifth win of the season on Wednesday in a 6-1 victory over the Vermont Mountaineers in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL).

Elliott had an excellent five-inning outing, allowing just one unearned run on three hits. The righty also struck out five Mountaineers batters and walked just two.

The Mountaineers started Thomas Muratore (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Lesley), who went six-plus innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits. Muratore struck out four and walked three Swamp Bats, suffering his second loss of the year.

The Swamp Bats got off to a quick start in the contest. With one out in the bottom of the first, Dean Lockery (New Haven, Conn./CCSU) crushed a solo home run to center field, putting Keene on top 1-0.

Vermont responded with the tying run in the second. Keene shortstop Lockery committed two costly errors with two outs in the frame, which resulted in two Mountaineers batters reaching base and Jeffery Scott (Forest, Ind./Bowling Green St.) coming across to score.

After back-to-back walks by Muratore in the bottom of the fourth, Alex Brewer (Lewisburg, Tenn./Vanderbilt) hit a grounder to Vermont first baseman Ryan Hoogerwerf (Allen, Texas/Portland), who was unable to collect it, which resulted in Alex Griffith (Bristol, Va./Virginia) coming home from third to make the score 2-1.

The Swamp Bats blew the game open in the bottom of the seventh. In a bases-loaded and nobody out situation, Nate Eikhoff (Bristow, Va./Virginia) scored two on a double down the first base line. The next batter, Robert Boselli III (Ventnor, N.J./St. John's), brought in Eikhoff and Lockery with a double to put Keene up 6-1.

Michael Koltak (Columbus, Ohio/Georgetown College) and Ricky DeVito (Staten Island, N.Y./Seton Hall) pitched in relief for the Mountaineers. The pair combined for two innings, allowing two runs on four hits, while striking out three.

The Mountaineers (12-15) will have Thursday off before returning home on Friday for a doubleheader against the Swamp Bats. First pitch of the first game will be at 5:00 p.m. at Montpelier Recreation Field. Game two will take place 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one. Both games can be heard on CBS Sports 1240-AM WSKI or online through The NECBL Broadcast Network.
