EL Players Of The Week

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the Major League Baseball Advanced Media selections for the Eastern League Pitcher and Player of the Week for the week ending July 22nd:

Altoona Curve outfielder/first baseman Jason Delaney has been named the Eastern League's Player of the Week for the week ending July 22nd. Delaney, who was promoted from Single-A Lynchburg to Altoona on June 27th, had an outstanding week for the Curve, batting .586 (17-for-29) with two doubles, three home runs, 11 RBI, nine runs scored, four walks and a .966 slugging percentage in seven games. The 24-year old has recorded at least one RBI in a club record eight straight games and also tied a club record by going 5-for-5 in a 10-4 win against Bowie last Wednesday. Since making his Double-A debut on June 28th Delaney, a native of Hanson, Massachusetts, is batting .346 with five doubles, five homers, 19 RBI and 17 runs scored in 24 games for the Curve. Jason was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 12th round of the 2005 draft after hitting .336 with a school record 256 hits during four seasons at Boston College.

Brooks McNiven, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Connecticut Defenders, is the Eastern League's Pitcher of the Week for the week ending July 22nd. The 6'5", 180 lb. hurler made a pair of starts for the Defenders last week and was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA. McNiven made his first appearance of the week at New Britain and took a no-decision after giving up one unearned run on five hits in seven innings of work on Monday. In his second start of the week the 26-year old surrendered two hits and one walk while striking out two batters in eight shutout innings to earn a win against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats at Dodd Stadium on Saturday night. McNiven, who is 4-1 with a 1.45 ERA since moving to the starting rotation on June 12th and is currently ranked second in the league in ERA (2.30) and WHIP (1.02), was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the fourth round of the 2003 draft out of the University of British Columbia.
