Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Mitch Einertson's one-out single in the bottom of the ninth scored Collin DeLome from second to give Corpus Christi a 3-2 victory over Frisco Thursday night at Whataburger Field before 6,314.
The Hooks improved to 8-11 in the second half of Texas League action and stand 39-50 overall. The first-place RoughRiders dropped to 12-7 and 45-44.
Corpus Christi rallied late with a two-run eighth to knot the score. Frisco starter Omar Poveda exited with two on and two out. Beau Vaughan then surrendered consecutive run-scoring singles to Drew Locke and Jason Castro. It was Locke's 80th RBI of 2009.
Thomas Diamond (0-1) came on for Frisco in the ninth and retired Jhon Florentino on a fly to second before DeLome doubled to left on a 1-1 pitch. Einertson then spanked an 0-1 fastball to left-center for the winner.
Poveda and Hooks starter Wilton Lopez matched blanks for five innings before Frisco took a 2-0 lead on four hits and an error. Craig Gentry opened the sixth with a single and raced all the way home when Einertson misplayed Dustin Majewski's single in right field. One out later, Chad Tracy chipped in with an RBI single.
Poveda benefited from an air-tight Frisco infield as the RoughRiders turned three double plays in the first five innings. He was responsible for five hits, three walks and two strikeouts. Fifty-eight of his 86 pitches were strikes.
Lopez threw 90 pitches, 58 for strikes, over six frames. He yielded six hits and struck out four. Erick Abreu (3-0) slammed the door for Corpus Christi over the final three innings.
Frisco's Johnny Whittleman had two hits, as did Florentino and Einertson.
Brad James (2-7) faces Frisco lefty Michael Ballard (2-5) Friday at 7:05. Fans enjoy postgame fireworks, courtesy of Bud Light.
