 Quad Cities River Bandits

Eighth-Rounder Added To Swing Roster

August 22, 2007 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

Tyler Henley became the latest member of the St. Louis Cardinals 2007 draft class to reach a full-season league on Wednesday, as the eighth-round pick out of Rice University was promoted to the Swing of the Quad Cities. In a corresponding move, Jared Schweitzer has been placed on the Disabled List and is expected to miss the remainder of the season.

Henley, a 22-year-old who was born in Alabama before playing his high school and college ball in Texas, had been playing with the New York Penn League's Batavia Muckdogs since signing after the draft. The outfielder was hitting .281 with a .403 on-base percentage, 14 runs scored, and four stolen bases through his first 18 professional games.

The left-handed hitter spent three years at Rice University, hitting a combined .317 with 20 home runs, 50 doubles, 203 runs scored, 122 RBI, and 26 stolen bases in 203 career games. In addition to average a run per game, Henley also boasted an on-base percentage over .400 in each of his three seasons while drawing nearly as many walks (94) as strikeouts (102).

Meanwhile, the move likely marks the end of a strong season by second baseman Jared Schweitzer, as an MRI late last week revealed a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. A native of Alberta, Canada, the 23-year-old has spent the entire season with the Swing, batting .290 with 10 homers, 10 doubles, and 38 RBI in 72 games played. One of the highlights of his season came on May 19 at John O'Donnell Stadium, when Schweitzer went 3-for-5 and slugged his first career grand slam against the West Michigan Whitecaps.

The Swing of the Quad Cities roster currently stands at 25 active players, the maximum allowed by the Midwest League. An updated roster accompanies this release.
