Eighth-Inning Rally Stuns Missions in Opener

San Antonio Missions News Release

When the teams last met Saturday in the Alamo City, right-hander Seth Simmons guided the Missions to a 1-0 win with a then career-high tying six innings of shutout ball.

The Winston-Salem, NC native was back on the bump in Thursday's series opener and continued his impressive run. In a new career high of six and a third innings, Simmons allowed just four hits and one walk, while striking out six. The six strikeouts were one shy of a career high for Simmons, who pushed his club, season-high scoreless streak to 15.1 innings.

For a while, it appeared as Simmons was on his way to another shutout of Midland. His offense gave him a pair of runs in the third off righty Heath Fillmyer, who was making his Double-A debut. Catcher Ryan Miller gave the Missions a 1-0 lead with a run-scoring groundout. Two batters later, Nelson Ward's double drove in Luis Tejada from third.

Simmons was relieved in the seventh by All-Star reliever Adam Cimber, who stranded both inherited runners.

In the top of the eighth, another All-Star hurler, Jason Jester, was not as fortunate. An early throwing error in the frame by Ward began what eventually turned into an inning to forget. Jester (0-1) allowed four runs (one earned) in the inning on three hits as the RockHounds turned the two-run deficit into a two-run advantage. The big blow was Viosergy Rosa's two-run, go-ahead double to right.

Corey Walter (2-2), who had replaced Fillmyer after five, made sure the eighth-inning rally held up as he put up two more zeroes to cap Midland's comeback.

Game two of the four-game series between San Antonio (12-15, 34-63) and Midland (19-8, 52-45) resumes Friday at 7:05 PM. Southpaw Tim Berry (0-1, 17.18) will get the ball for the Missions, while the 'Hounds counter with right-hander Ben Bracewell (5-1, 1.84). The first 2,000 fans to enter Wolff Stadium will receive a free Missions Replica Mike Piazza Alternate jersey courtesy of McCombs Ford West.
