Norfolk Admirals News Release

NORFOLK, Va. - Adam Hall had four points while Dana Tyrell and Justin Keller each had a pair of goals as the Norfolk Admirals (35-29-3-3) defeated the Adirondack Phantoms (30-33-3-3) 8-4 on Friday night at Norfolk Scope Arena. The eight-goal output tied an AHL Admirals franchise record for goals scored in a game.

Norfolk's lead over the Penguins for third place in the East Division remained one point over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins with the Penguins holding one game in hand. The Admirals and Phantoms will square off once again tomorrow night at Scope.

The Phantoms took a 1-0 lead 3:46 into the first period. Kevin Marshall sent a shot from the left point that Ben Holmstrom deflected from the left circle past Admirals goaltender Dustin Tokarski.

Norfolk knotted the score at 1-1 with a power play goal just under five minutes later. Adam Hall sent a pass from the left half wall to Ryan Craig at the bottom of the right circle. Craig sent a soft wrist shot that deflected off the skate of an Adirondack penalty killer and slid under the left leg of Phantoms goaltender Michael-Lee Teslak on its way into the net at 8:45.

Norfolk took a 2-1 lead under five minutes later. Dana Tyrell sped into the attacking zone along the right wing and stickhandled around a sliding Phantoms defender into the slot. He then unleashed a wrist shot that bounced off the crossbar and into the net for his seventh goal of the season at 14:22.

The Phantoms tied the game at 2-2 just 14 seconds into the second period. Mika Pyorala sent a pass to Jared Ross at the right point. Ross skated into the right circle before sending a slapshot from the faceoff dot past the glove of Tokarski.

The Admirals re-claimed the lead just over five minutes later. Adam Hall won a faceoff back to Matt Lashoff at the right point. Lashoff sent a wrist shot that Hall deflected in the low slot past Teslak at 5:36. The goal was Hall's 14th of the season and gave the Admirals a 3-2 lead.

Norfolk's lead briefly doubled just over three minutes later. Vladimir Mihalik sent a wrist shot from the right point that Justin Keller deflected at the top of the goalmouth. Teslak stopped the initial shot but Keller got his own rebound and sent it five-hole at 8:57 for his 14th goal of the season and a 4-2 lead.

The Phantoms struck back under a minute later to cut Norfolk's edge to one goal. Andreas Nodl picked off an Admirals pass at the right point and sent a shot through traffic and past the glove of Tokarski at 9:54.

Norfolk re-claimed its two goal lead at 13:29 on Keller's second goal of the contest. Blair Jones fed a pass from his own zone to Chris Lawrence in the neutral zone for a two-on-none breakaway with Keller. Lawrence fed a pass from the bottom of the right circle across the crease to Keller for a backdoor tap-in.

Norfolk stretched its lead to 6-3 just 2:36 into the final frame. Richard Panik carried the puck into the zone along the right wing and fed a pass across the slot for a tap-in by Carter Ashton on the back door. The play gave both Ashton and Panik their first professional points.

Phantoms forward Jonathon Kalinski scored less than three minutes later to make it 6-4 at 5:27.

However, the Admirals would score the game's final two goals to pull away with the win. Matt Fornataro stole the puck in the Norfolk zone and sped into the Adirondack zone along the left wall. He dropped a pass to Mitch Fadden, who sent a shot from the top of the left circle into the net at 6:39 for his sixth goal of the season.

Tyrell netted his second goal of the night to help the Admirals tie a franchise record for most goals scored in an AHL Admirals game. Scott Jackson sent a shot from the left point. The rebound landed at the feet of Tyrell in the low slot. Tyrell spun around and sent a backhand shot into the net at 9:22 for an 8-4 Admirals lead.

Dustin Tokarski (32 shots, 28 saves) got the win. Michael-Lee Teslak (23 shots, 19 saves) did not receive a decision after allowing four goals in the game's first 29:54. Kris Mayotte (15 shots, 11 saves) came into the game in relief and got the loss allowing four goals in 30:06.

Norfolk was 1-1 on the power play. Adirondack was 0-1.
