Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Frederick, MD - Justin Edwards tossed six strong innings to guide Winston-Salem over Frederick 4-1 in the opener of their three-game series on Friday night at Harry Grove Stadium. Edwards (4-3) limited the Keys to one run on four hits in six innings on the mound to earn the win as the Dash improved to 2-3 on their current seven-game road swing.
Winston-Salem third baseman Brent Morel provided the offensive spark going 2-for-4 with a home run, double and two RBI. He also made a pair of stellar defensive plays as the Dash went without an error for the fourth time in their last five games and continue to lead the league with a .978 fielding percentage.
Winston-Salem jumped in front in the first inning as Greg Paiml doubled with one out and Morel followed with a two-run shot over the left field wall against Kenny Moreland. It was Morel's team-best 15th home run and league-leading 73rd run scored.
The Keys trimmed their deficit in half at 2-1 in the bottom of the second inning with their lone run of the game. David Cash lined a two-out RBI single that score Caleb Joseph from third base. Frederick would only muster a pair of singles over the final seven innings.
The Dash extended their lead in the top of the sixth inning when Paiml led off with a walk and stole second. Tyler Kuhn followed with a single to put runners on the corners with no outs. Next, Morel hit into a fielder choice that retired Paiml trying to score from third and left runners on first and second base. Keys reliever Jake Stevens took over for Moreland and surrendered a two-out, two-run double to Justin Greene to give Winston-Salem a 4-1 lead.
Charlis Burdie tossed 1.2 innings of shutout relief for Winston-Salem and Santo Luis retired the final four batters to record his 10th save of the season and second is as many nights. Moreland (3-1) allowed four runs on five hits in 5.1 innings and suffered his first loss in the Carolina League.
The Dash and Keys meet up in game two of this three-game series on Saturday night at Harry Grove Stadium. Winston-Salem will hand the ball to RHP Miguel Socolovich (3-2, 4.84), who will be making his first start of the season. Frederick is expected to counter with RHP Kenny Moreland (3-0, 3.20). The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Dash returns to Wake Forest Baseball Park on Tuesday, August 18 when they open a four-game, three-day series with a doubleheader against the Potomac Nationals. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. For more information on all the upcoming promotions or to purchase single-game tickets, visit www.wsdash.com or by call the Dash office at (336) 714-2287.
