Edmonton Oilers Assign LW Kristians Pelss to Thunder From Oklahoma City

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Thunder, proud ECHL affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League, announced today that Edmonton has assigned rookie left wing Kristians Pelss (PELSH, KRIS-tee-yans) to the Thunder from the Oklahoma City Barons of the American Hockey League, recalled right wing Cameron Abney to Oklahoma City from the Thunder and Oklahoma City recalled defenseman Teigan Zahn from loan to the Thunder.
Pelss, 20, will suit up in #20 for the Thunder and should be available to make his ECHL debut on Friday vs. Bakersfield at 7:30 p.m. (1280 KWSX/StocktonThunder.com).
The 5-foot-11 and 175 pound forward was born in Preili, Latvia and selected by Edmonton in the seventh round (181st overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. He has collected two assists and a +1 rating in three games with Oklahoma City this season.
Pelss skated for Latvia in the 2011 and 2012 World Junior Championships, earning a gold medal (Division-I) in the 2010-11 season. His resume includes seven points (3g-4a) in 11 career tournament games and captaincy of Latvia last season.
He also competed in 126 career junior games with the Edmonton Oil Kings of the Western Hockey League and collected 42 goals and 83 points. He helped guide the Oil Kings to an appearance in the Memorial Cup tournament and earned a career high 28 goals and 50 points in 63 games last season. Zahn, 22, shares the Thunder lead in scoring along with three additional players, carrying five points in six games.
Abney, 21, made his season debut with the Thunder on Oct. 27 at Bakersfield and has skated in 14 career games with Oklahoma City.
A two time recipient of the ECHL "Award of Excellence," the Thunder led the ECHL in attendance for four consecutive seasons and drew over 200,000 fans for the seventh consecutive season in 2011-12.
