Edmonton Oil Kings and CMHA Edmonton Team up to Talk Mental Health

EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings and the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), Edmonton Branch are teaming up to raise awareness about the importance of mental health during an upcoming Edmonton Oil Kings home game at Rogers Place.

The Oil Kings game on Sunday, February 25, 2018 at 4:00 PM MT will feature:

A CMHA-run kiosk so fans can learn more about mental health

Videos featuring Oil Kings players talking about the importance of mental health

Public address announcements about mental health

The awareness campaign is part of the ongoing commitment by the Edmonton Oil Kings and CMHA Edmonton to implement Talk Today. Talk Today provides mental health support to players and raises awareness about mental health and suicide prevention throughout communities across the Western Hockey League (WHL).

A key piece of the Talk Today program has been to educate players about mental health and suicide prevention. Every team has received mental health training specific to suicide prevention. Each team is also now linked to a CMHA Mental Health Coach, who provides support and mental health resources to individuals in need.

"We are extremely pleased to partner with the Oil Kings to host another Talk Today event this year," said Chelsea Butler, CMHA Edmonton Advocacy and Wayfinding Coordinator. "Talk Today helps to increase public awareness and promote positive mental health for everyone. Members of the Oil Kings play leadership roles in our community, and have the opportunity to set a positive example for young fans and their families."

"The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) provides important and life-saving mental health resources to serve individuals in our community. Our entire Edmonton Oil Kings organization proudly voices our support for mental health awareness and are thrilled to be partnering once again with CMHA to support mental health initiatives," said Kevin Radomski, Edmonton Oil Kings Director of Business Operations. "We believe that creating a conversation around mental health can make a real impact by helping to break down common misconceptions and stigma associated with mental health. Those affected by mental illness are not alone and there are avenues for support. Let's start the talk, today!"
