Earthquakes to Host Special Olympics California Clasico

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the club will host a doubleheader against the LA Galaxy on May 27 at Avaya Stadium, with the Quakes playing at 6:45 p.m. followed by the Earthquakes Special Olympics Unified Team facing their LA Galaxy counterpart after the conclusion of the MLS match.
The Quakes Special Olympics Unified Team consists of 23 players, ages 16-25, both with and without intellectual disabilities that will compete in a first team experience. Partnering with Special Olympics Northern California, the Unified Game aims to provide athletes of all ability levels the chance to play and be part of a team while learning skills such as being a good teammate, winning with grace and encouraging others to carry positivity into their everyday lives.
"We are looking forward to giving our Special Olympics Unified Team a true first team MLS experience against our LA Galaxy rivals," said Earthquakes Executive Vice President Jed Mettee. "This is a true example of how soccer brings people together, and we are excited to welcome the team to our inclusive environment at Avaya Stadium."
The Unified Team will arrive at Avaya Stadium on May 27 and will watch the Quakes take on the Galaxy. After the final whistle, the Unified Team will change into their gear, sporting the official 2017 Quakes black jersey. Kickoff is scheduled for 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first match.
The Quakes Unified Team will also travel to Los Angeles later this year to take on LA Galaxy Unified Team for the second leg of the matchup. The match will take place on Aug. 27 at the StubHub Center in conjunction with the Quakes game against LA.
