San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that they have partnered with San Jose Councilmember Nora Campos to host backpack drives at their games on Saturday, Aug. 16 and Saturday, Aug. 30 at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes face the first-place New England Revolution on Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. PT and the Kansas City Wizards on Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. PT. Campos will attend the match on Aug. 30 to support the drive.
"We are committed to supporting the youth of San Jose," said Earthquakes Executive Vice President David Alioto. "This event will provide needed school supplies for the children of San Jose and provides Earthquakes fans with a chance to lend a hand also."
Fans who bring a backpack to the match against either the Revolution or Wizards will receive a coupon for a half-price ticket to a future Quakes game, subject to availability. The backpacks from Aug. 16 will be donated to underprivileged children at Goss Elementary School on the first day of school, Wednesday, Aug. 27, while the backpacks from Aug. 30 will be donated to the school at a later date. Fans can also make a monetary donation to help the City of San Jose purchase more backpacks.
"For many of our parents, buying basic school supplies, such as back packs, puts a financial strain on their budget," said Campos. "This strain is further enhanced by our current economic climate. As an elected leader, it is my responsibility to do everything I can to ensure that our children's only concern is the lesson of the day."
The Earthquakes and the City of San Jose will also accept donated backpacks at two locations between now and Aug. 30. Fans can drop off donations at the Earthquakes front office at 451 El Camino Real, Suite 220, Santa Clara, CA or on the 18th floor at San Jose City Hall, 200 East Santa Clara Ave, San Jose, CA.
Two Earthquakes players will also appear at Goss Elementary School on Aug. 27 to help hand out the backpacks and sign autographs for the children.
