Earthquakes Defeat Minnesota United FC 1-0 at TCF Bank Stadium Jungwirth scores second MLS goal, Wondolowski tallies fourth assist in victory

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The San Jose Earthquakes defeated Minnesota United FC 1-0 at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minn. on Saturday night, earning their first road win of the season. The Quakes made a goal by Florian Jungwirth early in the second half hold up by keeping their third shutout of 2017.

Chris Wondolowski tallied his fourth assist of the year in the victory, equaling the second highest total of his 13-year MLS career. His four assists currently rank tied for second in all of MLS and first among forwards.

The Earthquakes return to Avaya Stadium on Saturday, May 6 against the Western Conference rival Portland Timbers after concluding the three-game road trip with a 1-1-1 record. The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. PT and will air live on NBC Sports Bay Area Plus, KNBR 1050 and 1370 KZSF.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES HEAD COACH DOMINIC KINNEAR

On the team's performance: "We're playing well, we just haven't been scoring goals. Playing from behind always is tough, three games on the road is tough for any team in this league. I thought we played well. I thought we deserved to win. I thought even in the second half, we were controlling the tempo of the game and creating some good chances. A bit of a scrappy goal, sometimes that's what you need. Really happy for the guys."

On Florian Jungwirth's game: "Thought he had a good night tonight. Obviously good goal. Defensively he made some key interceptions there, especially at the end. A solid professional."

On the clean sheet: "Tough thing to do, they have some good attacking players. [Kevin] Molino and [Johan] Venegas really find some good opening in there. I thought we started off well and they kind of crept up the ladder the later stages of the first half. And I thought we started the game well in the second - they kind of crept in and we kind of sat a little too deep. When you get zero goals against you, it gives you a better chance to win the game and that was a key for us."

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES DEFENDER FLORIAN JUNGWIRTH

On the goal: "Yeah, we work a lot on set pieces, especially with assistant coach Steve [Ralston] who gives us a lot of good tips and shows us film. I watch that film and see spots I should be running through. You just have to run in the spot. It doesn't mean that the ball comes there, but if it does you have to be ready. Today was nice in that regard and we had about three chances and put one in.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES CHRIS WONDOLOWSKI

On his thoughts of Minnesota during their inaugural season in MLS: "I think Minnesota is a very good team. I think they have kind of righted their ship and are every solid in their two banks of four and very are talented when they are going forward. Very dynamic especially in [Kevin] Molino and [Christian] Ramirez and [Johan] Venegas. Guys like that, very dynamic players, makes it difficult."
