Early Runs Favor Savannah in Power Setback

(Savannah, GA- April 26, 2013)- The West Virginia Power dropped a 4-2 at the hands of the Savannah Sand Gnats on Friday night at Grayson Stadium. Five of the combined six runs were scored within the first two innings before the bullpens and defense settled in over the remainder of the game.

The Sand Gnats took a 3-0 lead off Clay Holmes in the bottom of the first inning. The Power starter faced all nine batters in the lineup, allowing three hits, hitting two and walking one. With the bases loaded, Holmes walked Greg Pron with the bases loaded to bring home the game's first run. Jeff Glenn was hit by a pitch to make it 2-0 and Pron then scored on a Phillip Evans single to close the scoring in the inning.

The Power responded with two runs in the top of the second off Savannah starter Steven Matz. Eric Wood walked andscored on a single by Raul Fortunato. After Jon Schwind walked Ashley Ponce singled to right field to plate Fortunato and cut the deficit down to one at 3-2.

Each team threatened over the next few innings. West Virginia had one runner on base in each inning except the third, eighth, and ninth while Savannah put at least one runner on in every inning but the sixth. The Power turned three double plays in the game to keep the Gnats off the scoreboard until the bottom of the eighth. The Sand Gnats added an insurance run against Power reliever Thomas Harlan to cap the scoring at 4-2.

Holmes (1-2) took the loss for West Virginia. Julian Hilario (2-1), the third pitcher used by Savannah in the game, notched the win and Beck Wheeler earned his first save with a perfect ninth.

The Power and Sand Gnats continue this weekend series on Saturday evening at 6:05 pm. West Virginia will send Orlando castro to the bump against the Sand Gnats Rainy Lara. The Power return to Appalachian Power Park on May1 to open a seven-game, eight-day homestand against the Greensboro Grasshoppers and Greenville Drive.
