October 11, 2017 - Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) - Cape Breton Screaming Eagles

News Release

SYDNEY- Round one in the battle of the Islands goes to Cape Breton. As the Charlottetown Islanders made their first visit to Centre 200 this season, the Screaming Eagles came out on top with a 4-2 victory.

Neither team was able to get much going, as they combined for just one shot on goal in the opening six minutes. Charlottetown had more of the early jump, outshooting Cape Breton 7-1 but the Eagles carried the final few minutes of the opening stanza. Neither team could light the lamp though and it was tied at 0 after one.

There would be goals in the middle stanza, and big saves as well. The first big chance came in the opening two minutes when Charlottetown's Adam Marsh was turned aside on a breakway by Kyle Jessiman. Not long after, the Eagles would find themselves short handed, but would get the best chances on the penalty kill.

First, Phélix Martineau would feed Ross MacDougall on a two one for a short handed opportunity. Matthew Welsh was able to turn that aside, but would face a bigger chance moments later when Tyler Hylland earned himself a penalty shot. Hylland went backhand fivehole on Welsh and the home team had a 1-0 lead. Under two minutes later at the 6:09 mark of the second period, Peyton Hoyt would tip a shot from the point to double the Cape Breton lead.

Both teams would find the back of the net before period's end. First it was the Islanders getting on the board, as just five seconds into a power play Keith Getson tipped a point shot past Jessiman to break the shutout. However, special teams was about to play a bigger role when Sullivan Sparkes was given a five minute major for kneeing. Mathias Laferrière would jam away at the puck in the blue paint to restore the two goal margin.

The Screaming Eagles would limit the Islander opportunities in the final twenty minutes, outshooting Charlottetown for the first time on the evening and preserving the two goal cushion. However with just under two minutes remaining Marsh sprung Getson with a breakway pass and he raced in to beat Jessiman through the legs and put the Islanders within one.

Shortly after Jim Hulton would life Welsh for an extra attacker. The attempt proved unsuccessful as Declan Smith would hit the open cage to secure the victory for the home side.

Jessiman stopped 27 of 29 shots in the victory, while Welsh turned aside 26 of 29 shots in the loss in addition to the empty netter.

Now the Screaming Eagles gear up for Rivalry Week and a home and home with the Halifax Mooseheads. Friday's game goes at Centre 200 at 7 PM. Tickets can be purchased at the Centre 200 box office, by phone at 902-564-2200 or online at https://tickets.capebreton.ca/Online
