Cape Breton Eagles News Release

SYDNEY- The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles sent plenty of rubber the way of Etienne Monpetit en route to a 4-2 victory over Val-d'Or and a two game winning streak.

The Eagles outshot the Foreurs 43-23 but actually had to come from behind as the visitors grabbed the first goal of the game. Cape Breton went to the power play just 18 seconds into the game when Maxim Mizyurin was sent off for high sticking. Val-d'Or killed the penalty, and Nadeau would earn a breakaway coming of the box. Kyle Jessiman made the initial stop but Mathieu Nadeau would claim the rebound and put the Foreurs ahead first. Cape Breton fired 13 shots in the opening frame but trailed 1-0 after twenty minutes.

Before the halfway mark of regulation things would turn the way of the home team. It began with a very eventful 5 on 3 power play as Val-d'Or's Yan Dion and Médérick Racicot were in the box at the same time for 63 seconds. The Foreurs would kill off the first penalty and even had a high quality scoring chance when a lucky bounce off the end boards landed on the stick of Nicolas Ouellet. But he was unable to convert and play would go the other way, and Phélix Martineau would bank in a rebound with a backhand shot to tie the game.

Monpetit would be solved twice before the period ended as the home side built a lead. The Screaming Eagles would move ahead on a goal by Egor Sokolov, as the big forward cut in off the left wing and fired a shot on goal which was turned aside, but Sokolov dug it out of the goaltender's pads and swept around the crease to put Cape Breton up 2-1. And then with under two minutes to play in the period, Peyton Hoyt would wire a shot off the side boards to fool Monpetit and gave the Eagles a two goal cushion.

Val-d'Or would push back in the third as Ivan Kozlov turned the red light on at 6:52. Kozlov collected a rebound after Eagles defenseman Alexis Sansfa on swept the puck off the goalline. But the Foreurs couldn't find another goal to knot the score.

Foreur coach Mario Durocher went all in early trying to tie the game, pulling Monpetit for an extra attacker with over three minutes to play. With an extra attacker Val-d'Or was able to spend substantial time in the Cape Breton zone, but couldn't beat Jessiman. The attempted comeback hit a major hitch when David Henley was given a penalty for checking to the head with 32 seconds to play.

Just trying to hold the lead, the Eagles worked a passive power play, focussed on killing the clock. However the puck movement opened up an opportunity for Hoyt who would score from the front of the net in the final seconds to seal the deal on a 4-2 victory.

Jessiman stopped 21 of 23 shots in the win, while Monpetit turned aside 39 of 43 shots in the loss.

The Screaming Eagles will play three more games during this home stand, next hosting the Gatineau Olympiques at the Nest on Thursday night.
