BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup history
Tonight marks the eighth-annual BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup, which pits the Dynamo against an international opponent with match proceeds to benefit charity. Tonight's match proceeds will benefit the Pursuit for those with disABILITIES bicycle ride, a 3,500-mile cross-country trek to raise money and awareness for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Real Sociedad completed the 2015-16 Liga BBVA season with two consecutive wins to finish tied for eighth place in Spain's top division. The 2015-16 season for the White-and-Blue was highlighted by a win over eventual league champions FC Barcelona on April 3. Founded in 1909, Sociedad has competed in Spain's top division in 45 of the last 48 seasons.
Mexico National Team star Carlos Vela highlights the traveling roster for Real Sociedad, who are led by manager Eusebio Sacristán, who started the 1992 European Cup victory for FC Barcelona. The roster also includes MF Xabi Prieto, who rose from the Sociedad youth academy and has made over 375 appearances for his hometown club since 2003. MF Asier Illarramendi is a former Spanish youth international and spent three seasons with Real Madrid.
Real Sociedad has won two La Liga titles (1980-81, 1981-82) and two Copa del Rey trophies (1909, 1986-87). Based in San Sebastián, in Spain's Basque Country, Sociedad has reached the UEFA Champions League three times, most recently in 2013-14 after La Real finished in fourth place in the 2012-13 Liga BBVA season.
The Dynamo are 4-3 all-time in the Charities Cup, with wins over Santos Laguna, Stoke City, Monterrey and Aguila. Tuesday is the first-ever meeting between the Dynamo and Real Sociedad.
Real Sociedad began their U.S. trip with a 2-1 loss to the San Jose Earthquakes last Wednesday, with Alberto de la Bella scoring for the visitors.
After tonight's game, the Dynamo return to MLS play with a road game at Vancouver Whitecaps FC at 5 p.m. CDT on Saturday. For tickets for every Dynamo home match, visit www.HoustonDynamo.com or call 713-276-GOAL.
