Durham Wins a Crazy Game Over Charlotte

Charlotte Knights News Release

FORT MILL, S.C. - In one of the more unusual and wacky games you will see, the Charlotte Knights fell short to the visiting Durham Bulls 6-4 at Knights Stadium.

The game was a bit off from the start as the Knights were forced to put relief pitcher Kyle McCulloch in the starting pitcher role when earlier in the day scheduled starter Jeff Marquez was recalled to Chicago. McCulloch did the best he could, pitching 4.0 innings but was dealt a big blow in the third inning when he allowed four runs.

The Knights came storming back in the bottom of the 5th with four runs of their own. That inning started with a leadoff triple from Donny Lucy which was followed up by an RBI double from Rob Hudson. Knights outfielder Alejandro De Aza continued the extra base hits with a double that scored Hudson which put the score at 4-2.

With De Aza on second base, outfielder Stefan Gartrell hit an inside-the-park home run to centerfield that tied the game. It was the second inside the park home run of the season from the Knights. Two batters later, the madness continued this time when Durham catcher Dioner Navarro was ejected from the game for arguing with the home plate umpire.

The Bulls were able to pull ahead adding unearned runs in the sixth and seventh inning. The Knights made three errors in the final four innings and were also picked off base three times. Durham's Dale Thayer earned the win and Winston Abreau picked up his 10th save of the season.

The Knights start a four game road series tomorrow at the Gwinnett Braves. RHP Matt Zaleski (5-5, 3.61 ERA) will start for Charlotte and RHP Todd Redmond (8-7, 3.92 ERA) will start for the Knights.
