Durham Snaps G-Braves' Win-Streak at Six Games

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA. - The Gwinnett Braves held a 1-0 lead through four innings, but couldn't complete the four-game sweep as the Durham Bulls snuck by with a 5-1 win on Sunday at Coolray Field. Right-hander Todd Redmond took the loss despite allowing two runs (one earned) over 5.0 innings, and the International South Division-leading G-Braves saw their winning streak snapped at six games.
All but one member of the Durham lineup recorded a hit on the day. Offensively, Nevin Ashley and Brandon Guyer did most of the heavy lifting with two-RBI games for each. Will Rhymes was the only Bull not to record a hit, as the leadoff man went 0-for-5.
The G-Braves captured an early 1-0 lead in the third inning when Stefan Gartrell walked with two outs and came around to score on a double by Ernesto Mejia. Mejia crushed a ball down the left-field line for his third double of the series and finished 2-for-4 on the day.
Durham answered back with two runs of their own in the fifth. With two aboard and one out, Tim Beckham hit a ground ball back to Redmond on the mound for a potential double play. The pitcher turned toward second base but fired wide of shortstop Greg Paiml for an error, keeping the inning alive. The very next batter, Brandon Guyer, capitalized off the mistake with a two-run single to put the Bulls in front, 2-1. Redmond (L, 1-1) went on to strike out the next two batters to conclude his outing.
Left-hander Jose Lugo came on and yielded three more runs (two earned) over 3.0 innings as the Bulls pushed the lead to 5-1. Gartrell dropped a fly ball in left field with two outs in the sixth to score Juan Miranda, and Ashley scorched a two-run double in the eighth to score Miranda and Jesus Feliciano.
Right-hander Jim Paduch made the spot start for Durham after Sunday's probable starter, Alex Cobb, was called up to the Tampa Bay Rays prior to the game. Paduch worked three innings, allowing one run on three hits. He struck out four while yielding just one walk. Right-hander Ryan Reid (W, 2-0) entered the game and worked two scoreless frames en route to the victory for Durham. Bulls pitching allowed a total of 10 hits to Gwinnett, but only yielded one run.
Christian Marrero, Jordan Parraz, Mejia and Gartrell all recorded multiple-hit games against the Bulls' staff. However, Gartrell was the only G-Brave to score a run during the game.
The Gwinnett Braves (7-4) continue the homestand with a four-game series against the Norfolk Tides (5-6) beginning Monday night, first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Erik Cordier (0-0, 6.75) is slated to start for Gwinnett, while Norfolk will counter with right-hander Brad Bergesen (0-1, 8.68).
