 Toledo Mud Hens

Durham Delivers Knockout in 14 Inning Bout.

July 26, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release

After coming off a rough Monday night loss in game one of the three game set against the Durham Bulls, the Hens would be part of a wild four hour and five minute marathon on Tuesday. Taking the ball for Toledo was Buck Farmer, who was coming off two solid outings as he looked for his third in a row and delivered against the tough Durham offense. Farmer's efforts were all for not however, as Bobby Parnell and the Hen pen were unable to hold down the pesky Durham Bulls.

Farmer oddly enough returned to the club on Monday after a quick day trip up to Chicago on Sunday to help the Tigers in their "double header", as they were allowed to add a 26th man. Farmer however, did not appear in either of the games for Detroit and was optioned back to Triple A. The send down continued the pitchers' crazy journey this season as it was the 9th transaction of the season between Toledo and Detroit for Farmer.

The right-hander picked up right where he left off with the Hens as he stifled the Durham offense over seven strong innings of work allowing just one run on four hits, striking out five. Farmer's only blemish of his outing came in the 5th when Jake Hager singled home the game's first run on a ground ball to center to take a 1-0 lead.

Durham starter Justin Marks countered Farmer's solid outing with one of this own as he cruised through the first six innings keeping the Toledo bats very quiet. Marks struggled once he came out for his seventh frame as Chad Huffman drew a walk to get the frame started. With one on Jacoby Jones turned around a Marks' fastball over the wall in right field to take a 2-1 lead. The round tripper was Jones' third as a Hen.

The Hens knocked Marks out after seven, and took advantage of Ryne Stanek who came on in relief. In the 9th, Argenis Diaz and J.D. Martinez struck RBI singles to bring home Dixon Machado and Diaz respectively as the game looked to be all but over as Bobby Parnell was summoned to come on and close out the ballgame.

Parnell however, continued his recent struggles, as he was unable to get ahead of hitters leaving the veteran in a major jam. After striking out J.P. Arencibia for the first out of the frame, Casey Gillaspie smashed a double to left. After recording a second out, the Bulls were down to their final out. Parnell's control issues continued with two gone as he walked Richie Shaffer to bring the tying run to the dish. Following a first pitch ball to Jaff Decker, the stocky outfielder slugged a game tying three-run home run into the seats in right as the crowd at Athletic Park erupted.

In extras, all was quiet until the 14th frame when Decker led off the bottom half with a single, and advanced on an intentional walk with just one away against Toledo reliever Chad Bell. Daniel Roberston was 0-for-6 on the night headed to the plate, but made his seventh at bat count as he stroked a seeing eyed single down the right field line to score Decker as the Bulls were victorious, pulling into just one game of first in the IL South.

The Hens wrap up their series in Durham on Wednesday as Warwick Saupold takes the hill for a 7:05 PM start. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
