Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse Chiefs, Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, were defeated 12-3 by the Durham Bulls Monday night in the series finale at Alliance Bank Stadium. Durham won the four game series three games to one. It's the first time the Chiefs have lost a series at home this season.

After being held to a single run in the first four innings, the Bulls erupted for seven runs against Chiefs pitchers Erik Arnesen and Ron Villone in the fifth inning. Jose Lobaton hammered a solo home run over the wall in right field to start the inning. With nobody on and two outs, outfielder Desmond Jennings slapped a base hit to right. After allowing walks to Matt Joyce and Dan Johnson, Arnesen hit Justin Ruggiano with a pitch allowing Jennings to come home from third with the second Durham run of the inning. After Arnesen gave up another walk, Bulls shortstop Angel Chavez clobbered a double off the wall in center, clearing the bases and extending Durham's lead to seven. The Bulls added one more on a throwing error by Pete Orr to close out the scoring. In total, the Bulls sent eleven hitters to the plate in the inning.

The Chiefs cut into the 8-0 advantage by tagging on three in the bottom half of the inning. Chiefs newcomer Sean Rooney whacked a single to right, knocking in Maxwell for Syracuse's first run of the game. Rooney scored on Kevin Mench's sacrifice fly to center. Shortstop Pete Orr also had a run-scoring single in the inning.

The Bulls out hit Syracuse 12-6 in the game. Three of those hits came from Desmond Jennings, who finished the night 3-5 with three runs batted in and a pair of stolen bases. First baseman Chris Richard chipped in with a single and a home run for Durham.

Richard De Los Santos registered his fifth win of the year for the Bulls. He went five innings, giving up four hits and three earned runs. He walked three and stuck out two.

Arnesen lost for the second time, giving up five hits, four walks and seven earned runs over 4 2/3 innings. The Chiefs have still yet to score a run with Arnesen on the mound. Syracuse pitching allowed eleven walks in the game.

The Chiefs are home again Tuesday night to take on the Louisville Bats for the first time this season. Major Leaguer Homer Bailey will make a rehab start for the Bats. Syracuse has not announced a starter yet. First pitch will be at 7:00.
