Drive Can't Figure Out GreenJackets, Lose 3-2

Greenville Drive News Release

Greenville, SC - The Greenville Drive (57-78, 28-38) got solid pitching from Brian Steinocher, but the trend continued as the Augusta GreenJackets (87-49, 37-29) handed the home team a 3-2 loss at West End Field. With the loss the Drive fell to 6-14 in 2007 versus Augusta.

Both starting pitchers kept opposing batters on tilt the entire evening, turning in solid outings in their final regular season appearances. Despite taking a tough-luck loss, Steinocher (3-12) had one of his best outings of the season. The right-hander allowed three runs while scattering eight hits in a career-high 8.0 innings.

In the other dugout, Ben Snyder was equally impressive. The southpaw allowed just one run on two hits while fanning seven and retiring the final nine batters he faced in 6.0 innings of work. Although it was a quality start, Snyder earned a no-decision.

Augusta got on the scoreboard first, scoring a single run in the top of the second as Matt Weston and Barry Gunther laced back-to-back, two-out doubles. The Drive answered back an inning later as Kristopher Negron singled, swiped his 29th base of the season and scored on Argenis Diaz's single.

After being held scoreless for four straight innings, the GreenJackets stung Steinocher for a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Ryan Rohlinger and Brad Boyer each tallied RBI-doubles off the Stephen F. Austin University alum.

Negron cut the lead to just one run in the bottom of the eighth as he cued a hard grounder down the right-field. The ball kicked around the corner and when all was said and done, the speedy third baseman had an inside-the-park home run.

Unfortunately the Drive would be unable to push across the tying run in their final at bat. Osiris Matos retired the first two batters of the ninth and allowed a single to Mike Jones before striking out Jason Place to end the game. It was Matos' fourth save of the season.

The Drive and GreenJackets closeout their season series Friday night with first pitch set for 7:05 PM at West End Field. Southpaw Ryan Phillips will toe the rubber for Greenville as Augusta counters with right-hander Adam Cowart.

Friday will also feature the second to last fireworks display of the year. Tickets to the final four games of 2007 can be purchased by calling (864) 240-4500 or by visiting www.GreenvilleDrive.com.
