 Tulsa Drillers

Drillers End Boggs' Streak

July 17, 2007 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release

Attempting to become the third 10 game-winner in the Texas League this season, Springfield starter Mitchell Boggs brought his seven-game winning streak to Drillers Stadium Tuesday night. In the attempt, Boggs became his own worst enemy. His error in the fifth inning opened the door for Tulsa to score four unearned runs, allowing the Drillers to post a 5-4 victory. The win was the second in a row for Tulsa over the Cardinals.

Trailing 2-1, Tulsa's key four-run inning began when Rick Guarno hit a bouncer to first baseman Mark Hamilton. Hamilton fielded the grounder and flipped to Boggs, but the pitcher missed first base for an error that allowed Gurano to reach safely. Tulsa pitcher Ching-Lung Lo then helped his own cause with an infield single that ricocheted off Boggs. After Corey Wimberly struck out, a single by Jonathan Herrera scored Guarno to tie the game up at 2-2. Following a wild pitch that advanced both Lo and Herrera, Christian Colonel popped out. Aaron Rifkin then put the Drillers in front with a two-run single to center. Rifkin advanced to second on a throw to the plate where he scored on Jordan Czarniecki's single that increased the lead to 5-2.

Springfield added a run in the top of the sixth on a Jose Martinez single and then threatened to erase the Tulsa lead in the eighth inning. Three hits off reliever Judd Songster trimmed the lead to 5-4. With one out and runners at first and third, Jarrett Grube retired Jose Martinez on a pop out and Juan Lucena on a ground out to preserve Tulsa's lead.

Closer Steven Register picked up his second save in as many games with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. It was his league-leading 29th save.

Tulsa took a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Wimberly led off with a walk and then stole second base. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Herrera and scored on a base hit by Colonel.

Herrera paced the Drillers going a perfect 3-3 with a run scored while Jordan Czarniecki was 2-4 with a double and RBI. The big night ended a five-game hitless streak for Herrera.

Tulsa starter Lo (5-6) threw six innings, allowing three runs off seven hits while striking out six batters to pick up the win for the Drillers. It was his second win a row.

The loss dropped Boggs' record to 9-4. In five innings, the right-hander allowed eight hits and five runs, but only one of the runs were earned.

Tulsa and Springfield will conclude their four-game series Wednesday evening at Drillers Stadium. Franklin Morales (1-4, 3.77 ERA) will start for the Drillers while the Cardinals will counter with Jaime Garcia (5-8. 3.70 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05.
