Drillers Beaten in Rain-Shortened Game

A two-game winning streak for the Tulsa Drillers came to an end Monday night in rainy Frisco, Texas. The Drillers failed to hold an early lead and fell to the Frisco RoughRiders 6-3 at Dr Pepper Ballpark in a game that lasted only 7 1/2 innings because of torrential rain.

The game was halted after the Drillers were retired in the top of the seventh inning. After a 34-minute delay, the game was called, giving the Riders the victory. The loss drops Tulsa's record to 2-3.

An early season trend continued in the game for Drillers pitchers as Frisco jumped to an early lead with a run in the first inning. Scott Heineman led off with a double and scored the game's first run on a one-out base hit by Juremi Profar. It is the fourth time in five games this season that Tulsa pitchers have surrendered a first-inning run.

The Drillers used the longball to erase the early deficit. In the top of the third, Stetson Allie led off with his first home run of the year to tie the game.

One inning later, the red-hot Kyle Farmer did the same, leading off the fourth with his first homer of the season to put Tulsa in front 2-1.

Frisco wasted no time in going back on top as Profar opened the bottom of the fourth with a double. After a fly out, the RoughRiders produced four straight singles, to plate two runs and move back in front 3-2.

Two more runs in the fifth increased the lead to three. Reliever Edward Paredes hit Isiah Kiner-Falefa with a pitch to open the inning before walking Profar. After a wild pitch, Eric Aguilera singled home both runners.

Tulsa reliever Ralston Cash walked Drew Vettleson to open the bottom of the sixth before proceeding to strike out the side, but the Riders still were able to add a run. Vettleson swiped both second and third bases before scoring on a wild pitch from Cash to make it 6-2.

The Drillers scored their third run in the seventh. Allie led off with a base hit but was forced out at second on a ground out by Tim Locastro. Locastro stole second base and scored on a two-out single by Kyle Garlick.

Another base hit by Edwin Rios brought the potential tying run to the plate, but Farmer grounded out to end the inning.

Before the bottom of the seventh could begin, rain began to fall, forcing the umpires to call for the tarp, and the game was never restarted.

Tulsa out-hit Frisco 10-8 in the defeat. Farmer, Allie and Locastro led the Drillers with two hits each. Farmer continued his strong start to the season and raised his average to .467. Starting pitcher Ivan Vieitez was tagged with the loss in his first start of the year. He surrendered six hits and three runs in 3.1 innings.

The Drillers will close out their season-opening road trip Tuesday morning in Frisco. Tulsa will need a victory in the finale to record a .500 trip and will send Scott Barlow (0-1, 10.13 ERA) to the mound for his second start of the year. Starting time is scheduled for 11:05AM at Dr Pepper Ballpark.
