Dragons stung by Bees, 9-0
August 7, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1) - Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, OH - The Dayton Dragons (23-21, 58-56) had swatted away the Burlington Bees (18-27, 53-59) in each of the first six meetings between the two teams this season. In the seventh match-up on Monday night, the Bees emerged from their hive using the arm of Erik Cordier (WP, 2-1) and the bat of Mario Lisson to sting the Dragons 9-0 at Fifth Third Field.
Burlington received an excellent pitching performance from starter Erik Cordier (WP, 2-1) in blanking the Dragons. Cordier allowed just two hits over 7.0 innings, striking out six and walking none. Michael Penn (ND) tossed 2.0 scoreless innings to keep the shutout in tact for Burlington.
The Bees got the only run they needed in the first innings, but would continue to pour it on throughout the night. With two down in the first, Lisson took a Travis Wood (LP, 9-3) pitch out to left-center to give Burlington the early 1-0 lead. Lisson added his second home run of the night in the third, again taking Wood to left-center field for the 2-0 advantage.
Wood was roughed up for four more runs in the 4th inning. Brady Everett led off with a double, and scored on Jeremy Jirschele's single to make it 3-0. One out later, Valentino Arce blooped a ball down the right field line. Right fielder Gerardo Cabrera dove after the ball, coming up empty, and his momentum carried him into the wall between the field and the lawn section in foul territory. While Cabrera was slow to get up, Arce continued to round the bases, not stopping until he crossed home plate with an inside-the-park home run, making the score 5-0. Jose Duarte then tripled, but was erased at home on Josh Johnson's fielder's choice. Johnson stole second, then scored with Eric Eymann couldn't handle Lisson's groundball. The error gave Burlington the 6-0 lead.
The Bees added a run in the sixth off Russell Haltiwanger (ND), one in the seventh off Sean Watson (ND), and one in the ninth off Rainer Feliz (ND). Lisson picked up the RBIs in the sixth and the ninth, giving him four on the night to lead the Burlington offensive charge.
All the while, the Dragons couldn't muster any offense. Craig Tatum's single in the third, and Adam Rosales' single in the fourth represented the only two hits the Dragons had on the night. Dayton did have two runners aboard in the 8th inning when Penn walked Tatum and Eric Eymann back-to-back, but a fly out and a groundout ended that threat almost as quickly as it started.
The Dragons and Bees wrap up the four game series Tuesday night at Fifth Third Field with a 7 p.m. first pitch. RHP Rafael Gonzalez (1-2, 7.47 ERA) will for the Dragons, while Burlington counters with RHP Daniel Cortes (1-0, 8.00 ERA). 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live beginning with the Dragons pre game show at 6:30 PM.
