Dayton Dragons News Release

Cedar Rapids, Iowa-The Dayton Dragons pounded out a season-high 13 runs as they defeated the Cedar Rapids Kernels 13-9 on Thursday night to earn their sixth win in their last eight games. The Dragons improved their second half record to 11-10 and will try for a sweep of the three-game series on Friday.

The Dragons have outslugged the Midwest League's top hitting team in the series, scoring 25 runs over the first two games. The Kernels lead the league in runs scored with 76 more than the second ranked team. The Dragons have collected 29 hits over the two wins against the Kernels, who also held the league's best second half won-loss record when the series began. They fell to 13-7 with the loss.

For the second straight night, the Dragons enjoyed a big first inning keyed by a home run by Jesse Winker. Winker hit a first inning grand slam on Wednesday. On Thursday, he followed a lead-off single by Beau Amaral and a walk to Sammy Diaz with a three-run home run to left field, his 11th of the year, to put Dayton ahead 3-0.

After Cedar Rapids tied the game in the second, Dayton scored four in the third to take the lead for good. Brandon Dailey's three-run home run to left field, his second of the year, highlighted the inning. Dayton added four more runs in the fifth to take an 11-3 lead as Winker drove in another run with a sacrifice fly and Seth Mejias-Brean added a two-out RBI single.

Cedar Rapids roared back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 11-7, but Dragons reliever shut down the Kernels into the eighth. The Dragons added a single run in the top of the eighth before Cedar Rapids answered with two in the bottom of the inning to make it 12-9. Dayton added one more in the ninth and Dragons reliever Kyle McMyne struck out the side in order in the bottom of the inning to close out the Dayton win.

Dragons reliever Tony Amezcua (3-1) was credited with the win as starter Ismael Guillon did not pitch the minimum five innings to qualify.

The Dragons finished with 11 hits. Mejias-Brean went 3 for 4 and is 8 for 9 in the series to raise his batting average to .284. Tanner Rahier also had three hits and extended his hitting streak to 10 straight games, one short of the team high for 2013 held by Junior Arias. Beau Amaral had two hits.

The Dragons close out the three-game series in Cedar Rapids on Friday at 7:35 p.m. (EDT). Nick Travieso (3-2, 4.91) will start for Dayton against Cedar Rapids' Brett Lee (5-4, 3.84). The Dragons open a three-game set at Quad Cities on Saturday. All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at daytondragons.com and wone.com.
