Dayton Dragons News Release
South Bend, IN - The Dayton Dragons were hoping a change of scenery would help put an end to a season long six game losing streak. The Dragons opened up an eight game eight day trip at Coveleski Stadium against the South Bend Silver Hawks. South Bend came put swinging picking up four runs in the bottom of the first inning and hung on to down the Dragons in the first game of the series by a 7-3 count.
After a 10-day layoff between starts, Dragons starter Rafael Gonzalez (LP, 9-2) had a little trouble shaking off the rust in the bottom of the first. Tyler Jones, Joey Side, and Gerardo Parra each picked up singles to load the bases for Brad Miller. Miller followed with a sacrifice fly to left, and South Bend led 1-0. A wild pitch made the score 2-0, and after Daniel Perales walked, Yunesky Sanchez doubled to left-center for two runs and the 4-0 lead.
Dayton started the comeback trail with a run off Tony Barnette (WP, 5-5) in the top of the second. Chris Heisey singled, and went to second on a wild pitch. Eddy Rodriguez followed with a sharp line drive to left field. The ball banged off the top of the wall, barely missing a home run, and was played perfectly by the left fielder Perales to hold Rodriguez to a single. Heisey scored on the play, and the Dragons were on the board but trailing 4-1.
With two down in the bottom of the second, South Bend added another run to their tally by picking up back-to-back doubles. Side's double went to right-center, and he scored when Parra doubled to left-center for the 5-1 lead. Steve Mena made it a 6-1 lead when he hit a deep home run to left field in the bottom of the third.
Chris Heisey knocked in the Dragons second run of the night with an RBI single in the sixth off Barnette with two down scoring Logan Parker, who had doubled one batter prior, to close the lead to 6-2. One inning later, Denis Phipps launched a solo blast over the wall in left center to get Dayton to within 6-3 but the Dragons could get no closer.
South Bend added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning off Misael DeJesus (ND), an unearned run to close out the scoring at 7-3.
The Dragons and Silver Hawks continue the four game series at Coveleski Stadium tomorrow afternoon with a Tuesday matinee beginning at 1:30 PM. The Dragons will send RHP Jordan Smith (5-5, 3.48 ERA) to the mound, while South Bend will counter LHP Jordan Norberto (2-4, 5.59 ERA). 1410 ESPN Radio will carry the game live beginning with the Dragons Pre Game Show at 1:00 PM.
