Dorados Add Local Product to Coaching Staff

The Rio Grande Valley Dorados added another member to the coaching staff, as Head Coach and Director of Football Operations Kevin Guy announced Frank Franz as the teamÂ’s ReceiverÂ’s Coach / Strength & Conditioning Director. Franz joins the Dorados staff while also serving as the Director of Strength and Conditioning at Renaissance Orthopedics. He attended McMurry University in Abilene, where he was an All-Conference quarterback and graduated in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. A native of McAllen, Franz built up his resume and his experience after McMurray by achieving his Masters of Education in Exercise Sports Science at Texas State University, where he also served as a Strength and Conditioning Coach with the various NCAA sports. Three NFL drafts, a first round NBA draft selection and a first round Major League Baseball draft pick were just a few of the athletes that trained under FranzÂ’ guidance. Franz has also served as a Coach/Educator at the high school level with El Paso-Coronado and locally in the Valley with Sharyland. He has also earned certification with the National Strength and Conditioning Association, the United States Weightlifting Federation and has received additional research training through Cincinnati Sports Medicine.

THE E-WATCH

Former Dorados defensive specialist Eddie Moten is the first and only player to advance his playing career from the Dorados to the higher level and is currently the youngest member of the Arena Football League ‘s (AFL) Philadelphia Soul. Moten, who was a rookie last season for the Dorados out of Texas A&M-Kingsville, co-led the af2 last season in interceptions with 10 and led the af2 in interception return yards with 124 yards. Each week we will keep tabs on his progress in AFL action:

Sun Feb. 27th vs Dallas Desperados

The Philadelphia Soul dropped to 2-3 on the year with a tough 72-43 loss at home to the AFL Eastern Division leading Dallas Desperados. Moten was second on the Soul in tackles with 4.0 tackles (3-solo,2-assisted) and had a game high two pass break-ups. The totals give Moten 18 tackles (15-solo, 4-assisted) on the year (ranks tied for 32nd in the league) and his team leading 9 pass break-ups (passes defended) ranks tied for second in the AFL, leaving him two back from leader Rashad Floyd of Colorado.

Next for Moten: The Soul will remain home to host the division rival New York Dragons (3-1) in an 11-AM scheduled kickoff on NBC this Sunday. (NBC determines which games are televised in each of their markets and KVEO Channel 23 could air the contest or could air the San Jose at Orlando contest).

A REVIEW OF THIS PAST WEEKÂ’S ANNOUNCED ASSIGNMENTS

Dwight Counter (WR/DB) 6Â’2 200 Dallas, TX New Mexico

Counter steps into the pro ranks after a tremendous college career at the University of New Mexico from 1999 - 2003. A team captain for the Lobos, Counter appeared in 50 games with the Lobos (starting in 34) over his career and racked up 122 career receptions for 2,101 yards (17.2 avg) and 14 touchdown receptions. The three time all-Mountain West Conference recipient leaves the Lobos ranking sixth on their all-time receptions list, fourth in career yardage and tied for fourth in TDs. Also leaves UNM as the only Lobo with two receptions of 80 or more yard, and also had six career 100-yard receiving games. Participated in the 2004 Las Vegas All-American Classic to close out his college career. Prior to New Mexico, the 23 year-old was a 1999 graduate of Lancaster High School. Counter was a First Team All-District receiver and team MVP, catching 46 passes for 746 yards and 10 touchdowns his senior year.
