Donnelly Drives 'Dogs Past Stars

June 28, 2016 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.-The SwampDogs overcame an early two run defect and responded with runs in four straight innings to defeat the Catawba Valley Stars 6-5 Tuesday night at The Swamp.

Pat Donnelly (Lehigh) paced the offense with three RBIs, including a game-tying, two- run double in the third. Matt Lahn (Lock Haven) spun five and a third innings of relief, continuing his dominance in two outings over the Stars. Lahn has thrown 13.2 innings against the Stars and surrendered just three runs.

Catawba Valley jumped out early with a pair of runs against starter Tyler Hoffman (Frostburg State) and looked to be in command behind starter Jordan Cummings, who did not allow a hit his first time through the lineup.

But the SwampDogs got the offense going with a two-out rally against Cummings in the 3rd and kept the pressure on him until his fifth inning exit.

The Stars had little success against Lahn, but had promising rallies in the eighth and ninth innings. In the eighth, the Stars had runners on first and second before Will Edwards (Chowan) ! induced an inning ending double play. Will Ziebol (Point) came on in the ninth inning with the tying run on second to nail down the save and preserve the win.

The SwampDogs finish the homestand against the Peninsula Pilots, who hold the Coastal Plain League's best record heading into the contest. It is Disney/Pixar Night at The Swamp and fans are encouraged to dress as their favorite character.
