Dirt Dawgs' Hitting Carries Them to a 10-2 Win

LEOMINSTER, Mass. - The Worcester Bravehearts (28-12) fell to the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs (15-24) on Wednesday night. The game was the second of four straight meetings this week between the teams and followed Tuesday night's eleven-inning battle in Worcester. The Bravehearts opened the scoring in the top half of the first inning when they plated two against Wachusett's starter, Joe Shaffer (Seton Hill/Pittsburgh, PA). The first-inning runs were scored courtesy base hits from John Friday (Franklin Pierce/Marlborough, MA) and Ryan Ward (Bryant/Millbury, MA). Ward, the only Braveheart with more than one hit in the game, ended up going three for four with one RBI. For the Bravehearts, the two runs scored in the first inning would be their only runs on the day.
Shaffer settled down, and Joe Thomas (Tufts University/Kansas City, MO) earned the win for the Dirt Dawgs after 2.1 innings pitched and one hit with three strikeouts and a walk. On the mound, Eric Close (West Chester/Berwyn, PA) got the start for Worcester, but would eventually receive the loss. He pitched 2.2 innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Cory Teachout (Ashland University/Medina, OH) and Joe Caico (New Haven/Hopedale, MA) provided relief, but the Bravehearts could not find an answer for Wachusett's offense. TJ Ward (Hartford/Jersey City, NJ) led the charge with two hits, five RBIs and two runs scored. The Dirt Dawgs ultimately won the game 10-2. The Worcester Bravehearts' next home game will be on Thursday, July 21st at 7:05 p.m. against the same Wachusett Dirt Dawgs.
