*Diamond Jaxx Struggle in Mobile*
After a 4-1 homestand against the Huntsville Stars, the Jaxx looked to continue their winning ways in Mobile against the BayBears, the Double-A Affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. In game one of the five game series on Monday, April 14th, Doug Fister and two relievers combined on a three hit shutout as the Diamond Jaxx blanked the BayBears 3-0. Fister allowed three hits over six innings to pick up the win. He walked two, hit two batters and struckout four. Brandon Morrow pitched two hitless innings, walking two while fanning one. Craig James finished the combined shutout with a scoreless ninth inning to nail down his second save of the season. The Diamond Jaxx scored a run in the third inning off losing pitcher Brooks Brown. Luis Valbuena doubled, took third on a bunt single by Mike Saunders and scored on a groundout by Mark Kiger. The Jaxx took a 3-0 lead in the eighth inning when Saunders hit a two run homer off reliever Vince Bongiovanni, his first home run of the season. Saunders, Valbuena and Prentice Redman had two hits each to pace the Diamond Jaxx six hit attack.
Mobile jumped out to a 7-1 lead and held on for dear life as they snapped West Tenn's three game winning streak, beating the Diamond Jaxx 8-7 on Tuesday, April 15th. The Diamond Jaxx were down 8-4 in the ninth inning when Ronnie Prettyman hit his second home run of the season to make it 8-5. With two outs, Mike Saunders singled, stole second base and scored on a single to center by Mark Kiger to pull the Diamond Jaxx to within 8-6. Adam Moore singled to put runners at first and second. The Diamond Jaxx scored their seventh run when Marshall Hubbard followed with a RBI single to center, driving in Kiger. Josh Womack, pinch running for Adam Moore, took third base on the single. With the tying run at third and the go ahead run at first, Reid Mahon struckout Prentice Redman to end the game. Rich Dorman suffered the loss for the Diamond Jaxx, giving up three runs on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings of work. Marshall Hubbard had two hits and two RBI's to lead the Diamond Jaxx offense. Mike Saunders, Adam Moore and Ronnie Prettyman had two hits each to pace the Diamond Jaxx eleven hit attack.
The Diamond Jaxx lost to the BayBears again on Wednesday, April 16th, by the score of 5-2. Marwin Vega suffered the loss in his Double-A debut as a starting pitcher. Vega allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits over four innings. He walked three and struckout five. Michael Saunders had two hits for the Jaxx.
Mobile scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to erase a 2-0 deficit as the BayBears beat the Diamond Jaxx 3-2 on Thursday, April 17th. With the Diamond Jaxx holding a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning, Jaxx closer Craig James looked to nail down the win for Chris Jakubauskas, who shutout the BayBears on just three hits over six innings of work. Cesar Nicolas singled to center to begin the winning rally for Mobile. Brandon Burgess slapped a single to right, putting runners at first and second. With the winning run at the plate, Frank Curreri hit a double off the right-center field wall, scoring Nicolas to cut the Diamond Jaxx lead to 2-1. With runners at second and third, Cyle Hankerd was intentionally walked to load the bases. Chris Rahl hit a ground ball to Jaxx SS Mark Kiger. Kiger's throw home was dropped by catcher Adam Moore, allowing Burgess to score the tying run. With the bases loaded and still nobody out, James walked Guillermo Reyes to force in the winning run, capping off the incredible comeback by Mobile.
The Diamond Jaxx salvaged the final game of the series, winning 5-4 in eleven innings on Friday, April 18th. In the fifth, a double by Marshall Hubbard knocked Saunders home to make it 3-1 Jaxx. Shawn Garrett grounded out to bring home Kiger, giving West Tenn a three-run lead. Mobile fought back but West Tenn broke a 4-4 knot in the 11th inning as Mark Kiger knocked a two-out, two-strike single off Vince Bongiovanni, which allowed Luis Oliveros to score the winning run. Oliveros wasn't even scheduled to start as he replaced Adam Moore in the Jaxx lineup just before first pitch.
There will be no rest for the Diamond Jaxx. Less than 12 hours after returning to Jackson, they will host the Birmingham Barons at Pringles Park. The game is set to begin at 7:05pm.
