Devil Rays Lose a Rain Soaked Game

May 18, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release

The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays lost tonight to the South Bend Silver Hawks by a score of 12-4. The Hawks' star player, Justin Upton, was just too much for the Rays in the rain soaked Thirsty Thursday at C.O. Brown Stadium.

Upton registered five RBIs in the first two innings and the Rays were never able to catch up. Devil Rays pitcher Jeff Kamrath walked three batters to load the bases in the second inning and Upton hit a grand slam to put South Bend up 6-0.

D-Rays first baseman Rhyne Hughes had a solid night at the plate, going 3-5 with a triple and an RBI. Christian Lopez went 2-5 with a couple of runs batted in.

Starter Jeff Kamrath gave up three hits with five walks and six earned runs in three innings of work. The Rays bullpen just couldn't find a rhythm in the rain. Eddie DeLaCruz came in at the top of the fourth inning and pitched two and a third frames. DeLaCruz fanned three batters while walking three and giving up three hits and three runs. Chris Kelly and Billy Evers combined for six hits and two earned runs.

The Devil Rays try to split their series with the Silver Hawks on Friday. The night marks the first of ten fireworks shows this season at C.O. Brown Stadium. It is also Hispanic Night with local Tex-Mex sensation Los Bandits playing live music before the game. In addition, local boy scouts will be in attendance and they will get to camp out in the outfield after the game. Tickets are still available. Call the Devil Rays office at (269)660-2287 for ticket information.
