Visalia Rawhide News Release

VISALIA -Through three and a half innings, the Rawhide had fallen behind 9-0 before they could even put a runner on base. They fought hard in the middle innings, scoring seven unanswered runs to make it a two-run game, but the deficit proved too much to overcome, as the Rawhide fell 11-7 to the Modesto Nuts on Friday night at Rawhide Ballpark.

It looked like it was going to be a blowout from the get go. Rawhide starterDaniel Watts (L, 0-2) was roughed up in 3.1 innings of work, giving up nine runs (eight earned), which included a five run inning for Modesto in the 3rd inning. Brian Humphries got things started in the 1st inning with a solo shot to right. The Nuts poured it on in the 3rd inning, as the first four batters reached base without recording an out. Jared Simon and Niko Gallego each recorded 2-RBI base knocks, and another run would come home to score on a wild pitch from Watts.

Ben Alsup (W, 7-8) was terrific to start the game. He had a perfect game through the first three frames that was broken up when Humphries lost a Kevin Medrano fly ball in left field that fell in for a triple. Medrano would score on a sacrifice fly from Gerson Montilla to put the Rawhide on the board.

Then the Rawhide started to slowly chip away at Modesto's lead. In his second game with the team, Ryan Stovall picked up his first hit with the Rawhide to lead off the 5th inning, which turned out to be a home run to left field. Medrano would pick up an RBI-single later in the inning.

Sean Jamieson had an RBI-single in the 6th inning to make it 9-4.

In the 7th inning, Montilla drove in an run on an RBI-single and Tom Belza followed it up with a two-run shot to right field to make it a 9-7 game.

Stovall and Jamieson got on base to start the 8th inning, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate with no outs. But Freeman grounded into a 4-6-3 double play which essentially killed the rally, and Evan Marzilli popped up to the shortstop to end the inning.

The Nuts would score twice in the 9th inning to provide some cushion, providing the final score of 11-7, as the Rawhide were retired in order in the bottom of the frame.

With the loss, the Rawhide's wild card lead falls to just three games ahead of Stockton, as the Ports beat the San Jose Giants 4-2. Game 2 of this series will be played on Saturday night at 6 pm.
