Denver Nuggets Sign Bakersfield's Brian Butch And Idaho's Coby Karl

NEW YORK, April 11, 2010 - The Denver Nuggets today signed center Brian Butch of the Bakersfield Jam and guard Coby Karl of the Idaho Stampede making them the 37th and 38th GATORADE Call-Ups of the 2009-10 NBA Development League season. The duo joins 82 current NBA players with NBA D-League experience.

Butch appeared in 39 games, 38 starts, for Bakersfield this season, averaging 17.7 points, a 11.9 rebounds (second in the NBA D-League) and 1.7 assists in 33.9 minutes. He scored in double figures 36 times and reocrded 25 double-doubles during the season. He tallied a season-high 33 points in a 120-109 road victory over the Tulsa 66ers on March 25 and pulled down a season-high 24 rebounds in a 102-97 victory over the Albuquerque Thunderbirds on Feb. 23 in Bakersfield.

A key contributor all season, Butch led the Jam in rebounding 30 times and was the leading scorer in seven games. The 2010 NBA D-League All-Star Most Valuable Player, Butch scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in Dallas in February.

A four-year contributor at Wisconsin, Butch averaged 12.4 points and 6.6 rebounds in 36 games during his senior season. In 2007, he was named All-Big 10 Honorable Mention for his efforts.

Karl appeared in 26 games, all starts, for the Stampede this season, averaging 19.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.9 assists in 38.8 minutes. He scored in double figures 23 times, recording a season-high 36 points in back-to-back games in January, a 129-116 loss to the Reno Bighorns on Jan. 16 and a 116-108 road win over the Utah Flash on Jan. 19.

Karl, the son of Nuggets head coach George Karl, returns to the NBA having played seven games with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors earlier this season. In those seven games, he averaged 7.0 points, 2.0 rebounds and 15.4 minutes. In his second NBA season, Karl has appeared in 24 career NBA games with the Cavaliers, Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers. He owns NBA career averages of 2.4 points, 1.3 rebounds and 7.7 minutes.

During his senior season at Boise State, Karl averaged 14.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.0 assists, earning All-WAC First Team for his efforts in 2007.

Butch and Karl and expected to join the Nuggets today and be available tomorrow when the team hosts the Memphis Grizzlies in Denver.
