Texas Copperheads News Release

HOUSTON, TX - Texas linebacker STANLEY SMITH has been named the ADT Defensive Player of the Week for Week 14 of the 2007 season. In addition to this award the af2 is also highlighting the player who makes the best catch of the week. The Cutters Catch of the Week Award for Week 14 goes to Texas wide receiver JASON DEML.

ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Smith (6-1, 240, Louisiana-Lafayette) had a stellar night defensively in his af2 debut in Week 14 for Texas in the team's 74-44 home loss to Lubbock. Despite the defeat, the Copperheads rookie from Louisiana Lafayette made quite a first impression with five tackles, two sacks, one pass breakup, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries against the Renegades. Both of Smith's fumble recoveries resulted in touchdowns as well. He snared his first recovery in the end zone for a score in the second quarter and picked up his second in the fourth quarter and returned it 23 yards for a touchdown. Smith is the second Texas player honored by the af2 with a weekly award this season. WR/KR Jarrod Fuller earned the U.S. Army Ironman of the Week Award for his strong two-way play in Week 6.

CUTTERS CATCH OF THE WEEK

Deml (6-4, 210, Louisiana-Monroe), who is in his first season in the af2, is the Week 14 recipient of the Cutters Catch of the Week Award, a weekly honor that emerged last year to highlight the player who makes the best catch of the week. Deml's catch was a one-handed, 39-yard touchdown in the first quarter of Texas' home loss to Lubbock on Saturday. The rookie from Louisiana-Monroe snared the scoring pass over his left shoulder as a Renegades defender ran stride for stride with him down the left sideline. Deml finished the night with five catches for 83 yards and two touchdowns. He currently ranks third on the squad in receiving with 30 catches for 370 yards and four touchdowns.
