Delmarva Tops Lakewood 5-3
May 29, 2007 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ-Brandon Tripp and Miguel Abreu each homered for Delmarva and it was enough to take the first of 3 from Lakewood 5-3 on Tuesday night at FirstEnergy Park.
The BlueClaws (25-23) left 11 runners on base, and Gus Milner, who homered in the game, grounded back to pitcher Brett Bordes to end the game with the tying run on 2nd base. Lakewood is now 5-3 on their 10- game homestand and 5-6 against Delmarva this season.
Lakewood starter Darren Byrd (4-3) allowed 5 runs over 7.1 IP, but had only allowed a 2-run homer by Tripp (7) and a solo blast by Abreu (4) going into the 8th, when he crossed the 100 pitch threshold. Then, he allowed a leadoff single to Michael Pierce and then successive singles to Bobby Andrews and David Cash.
After new BlueClaws pitcher RJ Swindle came in, Andrews scored from third while winning a rundown to make it 5-2.
The BlueClaws got a homer from Milner (4) in the 6th inning, a ball which flew past signage boards in left field, and a bases loaded walk to Kevin Howard in the 7th. Trailing 5-2 going to the 9th against Bordes, they loaded the bases with 1 out without getting a hit. However, Kevin Howard grounded out, scoring 1 run, and then Milner bounced back to the mound to end the game.
Kyle Schmidt (2-2) got the win, allowing just 1 run over 6 IP and striking out 9 hitters. Bordes got his first save of the season for Delmarva (21-28), who left just 2 runners on all night.
The series continues Wednesday night at 6:35 as Edgar Garcia (1-3, 4.30) throws for Lakewood against Delmarva's Josh Tamba (0-2, 5.40). You can hear the game on the Shore Sports Network (1160 WOBM-AM and 1310 WADB) beginning at 6:20.
NOTE: The BlueClaws made several roster moves before the game. They activated RHP Ben Pfinsgraff from the DL and to make room placed RHP Kyle Drabek on the disabled list with right elbow inflammation. Closer Ronald Hill was called up to Clearwater and the team also added LHP RJ Swindle, who signed from the Newark Bears.
