PREVIEW: The Shorebirds wrap up a four game series on the road tonight in Kannapolis, NC against the Kannapolis Intimidators at Intimidators Stadium. Kannapolis is the Class A Affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. The Shorebirds have won five of their last seven games and have a chance to win the series this weekend after winning the last two games 10-4 and 4-2. Tonight will be the seventh of 19 meetings this season between the two teams, with the season series tied, 3-3. The two teams just played a three game set in Kannapolis last week. The only remaining trip to Kannapolis on the schedule is a 4-game set to open the second half June 23-26.
TODAY'S OPPONENT: Right-hander Zach Thompson takes the hill in the final game of the weekend series against the Shorebirds. Thompson is 6'6" 185 pound 22-year old pitcher from Burleson, Texas. He was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 5th round of the 2014 MLB First Year Player Draft out of the University of Texas-Arlington. Thompson returned to Kannapolis after spending the entire season there last year, making 16 starts and posting a 3-8 record with a 4.44 ERA. Thompson throws a fastball that sits in the low 90's, an over-hand curve and a circle change.
ROSTER OVERVIEW: Delmarva opens the year with each of the Orioles' First Round Draft picks last summer in shortstop Ryan Mountcastle and outfielder D.J. Stewart. According to Baseball America, the Shorebirds have five of the top 30 prospects in Baltimore's farm system on their roster. Aside from Mountcastle and Stewart, pitchers Ofelky Peralta (#17) and Garrett Cleavinger (#26), along with catcher Alex Murphy (#27), are among the O's most highly-touted farmhands. RHP's Christian Turnipseed and Ryan Meisinger have both posted solid numbers as well.
