Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - Delmarva had runners at second and third with nobody out in the top of the ninth, but couldn't drive home the tying run in a 3-2 heartbreaking loss to Hagerstown at Municipal Stadium on Wednesday night.
Delmarva (63-64, 21-37) had chances to score all evening but only managed a couple of runs in the top of the seventh inning on Cedric Mullins' 11th home run of the season.
Wednesday night was all about missed opportunities for Delmarva. The Shorebirds had runners at first and second with two outs in the first inning, but failed to score. The Shorebirds had runners on the corners with one out in the fourth, but hit into an inning-ending double play. In the fifth, Stuart Levy tried to score on a wild pitch, but Reistetter flipped the ball back to Joan Baez at home plate in time for the out. In the top of the sixth, Delmarva had runners at first and second with nobody out. Alex Murphy struck out, Natanael Delgado flew out and Ademar Rifaela struck out to end the frame.
After Mullins homered to tie the game in the top of the seventh, Mike Burke (0-3) came on to relieve Alvarado. 2016 draftee Jake Noll took Burke deep to right-center for a solo blast and it gave Hagerstown (76-53, 33-26) the lead back at 3-2.
Delmarva had one last chance in the ninth inning. Steve Laurino walked and Stuart Levy doubled to open the inning. Trailing 3-2, Drew Turbin grounded out to the pitcher, Cedric Mullins popped out to first baseman Grant DeBruin and Ricardo Andujar struck out to end the game. The Shorebirds finished the night 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
Cristian Alvarado allowed two runs over six innings of work but didn't factor into the decision. He allowed a two out, RBI single in the fourth to Matt Reistetter and a sacrifice fly in the sixth from Rhett Wiseman, but he kept the Shorebirds in the game all night.
The Shorebirds conclude the three game series in Hagerstown on Thursday night at 7:05 pm. Delmarva has dropped a season-high six games in a row and is looking to avoid a second consecutive sweep. Brendan Gulick will have the broadcast beginning with Shorebirds On-Deck at 6:50 pm on Fox Sports AM 960 and online at theshorebirds.com.
