Connecticut Defenders News Release

NORWICH, CT- The Defenders took advantage of yesterday's rainout to rest up as well as a rumpus crowd of 5,487 at Dodd Stadium Saturday night and pulled off a doubleheader sweep of divisional rival New Hampshire by the final of 3-2 in each game.

In game one, Connecticut used back to back RBI doubles by SS-Brandon Crawford and RF-Mike Mooney to take a one run lead in the bottom of the sixth for good.

The Defenders grabbed the lead in the first with a leadoff double by 2B-Brock Bond who moved to second on a CF-Mike McBryde sac bunt. Bond later scored on a double error by Fisher Cat's first baseman David Cooper.

New Hampshire eventually tied things up in the fourth when 2B-Brad Emaus scored on a wild pitch and the Fisher Cats captured the lead in the fifth with a LF-Todd Donovan sac fly.

Defenders' starter RHP-Daryl Maday (5-3) allowed just the two earned runs off of six hits and struck out one in his first complete game of his young career while earning his fifth win of the season.

Fisher Cats' reliever RHP-Danny Farquhar (1-4) suffered the loss after tossing just two thirds of an inning allowing one earned run off of two hits.

In game two, the Defenders called upon 2B-Brock Bond to put them upon his shoulders and he didn't disappoint delivering a game winning walk-off RBI single up the middle with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Just like game one Connecticut grabbed the lead in the first receiving back to back singles by CF-Mike McBryde and LF-Brad Boyer placing runners on the corners. 1B-Brett Pill drove in McBryde with an RBI groundout to third base.

New Hampshire climbed in front with a two run blast by 2B-Brad Emaus in the fifth, but that would be all off the birthday boy, Madison Bumgarner. Bumgarner left tossing five innings, allowing just the two earned runs off of seven hits, walked one and fanned two in the no decision.

Defenders' reliever LHP-Joe Paterson (4-4) fired one pitch and got the final out in the seventh to earn his fourth win.

Connecticut will look for the series sweep tomorrow in the series finale at 1:05pm at Dodd Stadium. The Defenders' will toss RHP-Garrett Broshuis (2-2) against Fisher Cats' LHP-Luis Perez (7-8).

Sunday is Sundae-Fundae-Rundae courtesy of Edy's where kids get to run the bases post game as well as receive FREE ice cream. Mohegan Sun has a surprise giveaway for fans 21 years or older and BIG Y kids get in FREE while wearing a youth jersey with a paying adult.
