New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - Whit Robbins was perfect at the plate, including hitting his fourth home run of the season, but the Rock Cats fell short as the Defenders walked away with a 4-2 victory.
Brett Pill's single in the first drove in Antoan Richardson, who had singled and stole third in the inning, to put the Defenders ahead, 1-0.
In the third, Rock Cats' starter Matthew Fox hit the first two batters he faced before forcing a fly out and force groundout. Bobby Felmy stole second before Mike Mooney drew a walk that loaded the bases. That set the stage for Brad Boyer's (3-for-4) double to right field that scored two runs.
Robbins slugged a two-run homer for the Rock Cats in the fourth that closed the gap, 3-2. Felmy homered for the Defenders in the fifth.
Daryl Maday (2-1) limited the Rock Cats to two runs on seven hits through 6 1/3 innings. Fox (1-2) took the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five.
The Rock Cats had the opportunity to tie or take the lead in the bottom of the eighth when Steve Tolleson reached base on a walk, Danny Valencia delivered a two-out double, and Robbins (3-for-3) drew a walk to load the bases. Brian Dinkelman struck out to end the inning. Dan Otero tossed a scoreless ninth to pick up his eighth save.
