Defenders Shut Out Fisher Cats 1-0

NORWICH, CT- Connecticut's Garrett Broshuis tossed six scoreless innings as the Defenders shut out the Fisher Cats 1-0 at Dodd Stadium on Wednesday night.

C-Jackson Williams delivered a two-out double in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring SS-Brandon Crawford who reached on a leadoff single as Connecticut took a 1-0 lead.

The Fisher Cats and the Defenders battled back and forth in a heated ball game that saw three ejections. CF-Mike McBryde was sent to the showers in the fourth inning after being called out at first base by John Conrad. Jason Arends tossed out New Hampshire's 1B-David Cooper and hitting Coach Paul Elliott in the eighth for arguing balls and strikes. When the dust finally settled, it was Connecticut still standing.

RHP-Garrett Broshuis (5-4) dazzled the fans and the Fisher Cats picking up his fifth win of the season going six scoreless innings allowing six hits and matched his season high with five strikeouts. Suffering the loss for the New Hampshire was RHP-Kenny Rodriguez (4-4) despite a great performance in six innings allowing just one run on seven hits. LHP Matt Yourkin entered the ball game in the ninth inning to record the final two outs and earn his eighth save of the season.

Connecticut (80-56) and New Hampshire (63-74) will play for the final time this season tomorrow night at Dodd Stadium at 6:35pm. The Defenders are just three wins away from tying a franchise mark of 83 wins set back in 2001. On the bump tomorrow for Connecticut will RHP Geivy Garcia (2-3) and the Fisher Cats will counter with RHP Adrian Martin (3-2) in the finale.

Tomorrow night at the ballpark is also Thirsty Thursday, the first 500 fans 21+ through the gates will receive a Samuel Adams pint glass and have $3 dollar Sam Adams draft specials all night.
