Texas Stars News Release

TUCSON, Ariz. - Brandon DeFazio tallied the first hat trick of the season, but it was not enough on Saturday night as the Texas Stars fell to the Tucson Roadrunners by a 5-3 final at Tucson Arena.

The Stars and Roadrunners combined for five power play goals in the contest and a five-goal second period. DeFazio's hat trick was the first since Jan. 16, 2016, when Brendan Ranford scored three times in San Diego. After snapping a 0-for-19 drought on the power play Wednesday in Ontario, Texas struck three times on the man-advantage in the losing effort.

The Stars (17-14-1-2) and Roadrunners (17-9-4-0) close out their weekend set on Saturday at 8:05 p.m. CST.

Tucson's Jamie McBain opened up the scoring on a breakaway chance with 2:24 remaining in period one then the offensive flood gates opened up in period two between both teams.

McBain struck again from the point on the power play to make it 2-0 at 2:39. DeFazio tallied his first on an odd-man rush from Caleb Herbert and Travis Morin three minutes later, but Anthony DeAngelo gave Tucson a 3-1 lead at 11:18. DeFazio deflected Julius Honka's point shot just over a minute later for his second of the game. Michael Bunting then scored on a loose puck in front for the Roadrunners at 13:59 of the period to cap off the period's scoring. Texas and Tucson traded the last three goals of the second in a 2:41 span.

DeFazio's hat trick goal came on a scrum in front during a two-man advantage for the Stars at 5:17 of the third to give him a team-leading 13 goals on the season. With the Texas goalie pulled, Christian Fischer added an empty-net goal with 37 seconds to play.

Maxime Lagace suffered the loss with 27 saves in net. Adin Hill earned the win stopping 39 of 42.

Texas finished 3-for-8 on the power play. Tucson went 2-for-4.
