(Rochester, NY) - Rochester starter Pat Dean pitched eight shutout innings and combined with reliever A.J. Achter on a five-hitter as the Red Wings blanked the Pawtucket Red Sox, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon at Frontier Field to take their second straight in the three-game series.

Kennys Vargas drilled a three-run home run (6) in the first inning against Pawtucket starter Shawn Haviland (5-9) to put Rochester ahead to stay and the Red Wings collected 11 hits on the afternoon. Dean (11-11) scattered five hits and one walk while striking out three.

Vargas's deep blast to right field was the third consecutive hit against Haviland in the first, following out-out singles by James Beresford and Danny Santana. Rochester plated single runs in the fourth and fifth on an RBI single by Aaron Hicks and a fielder's choice grounder by Eric Fyer.

Haviland permitted nine hits and five runs (four earned) in five innings of work. Keith Couch relieved him and allowed two runs in two innings of work, each scoring in the seventh courtesy of a sacrifice fly by Danny Ortiz and an RBI single from Oswaldo Arcia.

Dean was relieved by A.J. Achter, who worked around a one-out walk to Carlos Rivero in the ninth to finish Rochester's 21st shutout victory of the season. It was the Red Wings' ninth blanking in the month of August.

Deven Marrero, Marco Hernandez, Rivero, Mike Miller and Matt Spring each collected one hit for Pawtucket. Ryan Cook tossed a perfect eighth inning for the PawSox behind Couch.

The series finale is scheduled for Monday night with first pitch at 7:05pm, as the PawSox play their final road game of the season. Right-hander Zeke Spruill (4-9, 4.22) will get the start for Pawtucket while Rochester counters with righty Jose Berrios (4-2, 2.78). Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 6:50 pm.

The PawSox return home on Tuesday, September 1st to welcome Lehigh Valley at the beginning of the final homestand of the 2015 season. Good seats are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com.
