Daytona Turns in One-Hit Wonder in Win

June 5, 2016 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Daytona Tortugas News Release

Fort Myers, FL - The Daytona Tortugas used four different pitchers to combine for a one-hit shutout win, beating the Fort Myers Miracle 4-0 at Hammond Stadium Sunday night. LHP Ismael Guillon, RHP Jimmy Moran, RHP Nick Howard, and LHP Brennan Bernardino was the combination used to toss the third shutout of the season for Daytona.

Daytona's pitching was the story, carrying a no-hitter all the way to the bottom of the ninth inning. Bernardino came in for the ninth and allowed the only Fort Myers hit, a Tanner Witt single to right field.

Guillon made the spot start, tossing the first four innings and keeping the Miracle at bay. Moran (1-0) picked up the win, tossing three shutout innings of relief to follow. Howard turned in one of his best innings of the season, picking up two strikeouts, before Bernardino worked around the lead-off single in the ninth to preserve the 4-0 win.

Offensively, the Tortugas flipped the script on the Miracle from the previous two games, by being the one's to strike first. A Taylor Sparks home run to left field to leadoff the second inning gave Daytona the lead that they would never relinquish. It was his sixth homer of the year and fourth in the last nine games.

Daytona's offense would capitalize in the fifth inning, plating a trio of runs. With two outs, and runners at first and second, Brian O'Grady sliced a double down the right field line to score Angelo Gumbs and Sparks. Ronald Bueno followed with a run-scoring triple to drive home O'Grady and give Daytona the 4-0 margin.

The Tortugas look for the series sweep Monday at Hammond Stadium. RHP Tyler Mahle (6-3, 3.13 ERA) will make the start for Daytona while Fort Myers counters with LHP Tyler Jay (4-4, 2.44 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM with the Chili's pre-game show beginning at 6:50 PM on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB.

Notes: It was the third shutout victory for Daytona this year. Their other two were June 20th vs. St. Lucie and May 10th vs. Brevard County...The Tortugas made a bid for their first no-hitter since July 8th, 2013 when Matt Loosen tossed a nine inning no-hitter against Dunedin. It would have been the 20th in Daytona baseball history, dating back to 1948...Sparks is now tied with Aristides Aquino for the team lead in homers and paces the team with 31 RBIs, including 12 in the last nine games.
