Davis' Three-Homer Night Helps Hooks Rally Past Missions in Finale
May 19, 2016 - Texas League (TL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release
San Antonio wasted a terrific outing from starter Michael Kelly as they fell to Corpus Christi 8-4 Thursday night in the series finale at Wolff Stadium.
Kelly, who was making his just his second start at the Double-A level, was impressive once again Thursday night. The right-hander allowed just one run on seven hits and one walk, while striking out six over seven brilliant innings. The Hooks' only tally against Kelly came in the fourth when J.D. Davis took a 3-1 pitch over the wall in right.
San Antonio answered in the bottom of the fifth against starter Keegan Yuhl, quickly tying the game at one when Gabriel Quintana followed a Nick Schulz leadoff single with a double into the gap in left center. Next batter, Ryan Miller, gave the Missions the lead with a single to right.
In the bottom of the seventh, San Antonio pushed its lead to 3-1 on Jose Rondon's run-producing groundout.
However, the Hooks took full advantage of Kelly's departure in the eighth, turning their deficit into a 6-3 lead on reliever Ramon Benjamin (0-2). After walking Teoscar Hernandez to begin the inning, Benjamin allowed Corpus Christi to tie the game at three when Alex Bregman followed with a homer to right. Benjamin then allowed the Hooks to take the lead for good two pitches later as he plunked James Ramsey before serving up another Davis dinger. Rodrigo Ayarza capped the five-run uprising later in the frame with a single off Benjamin's replacement, Elliot Morris.
Yeison Asencio got the Missions one of the runs back in the bottom half with an RBI single off reliever Michael Freeman.
Davis became the first Texas League player in three seasons to collect a three-homer game when he capped scoring with a two-run shot off Morris in the top of the ninth.
Brendan McCurry, who replaced Freeman (3-1) after the Asencio single in the eighth, came back out for the ninth to wrap up the Corpus Christi (24-15) sweep and pick up his seventh save of the season. The victory was the Hooks' franchise-record, tying 10th in a row.
San Antonio (12-27) heads up to the metroplex to open up a four-game series with Frisco (27-12) Friday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Kyle Lloyd (1-0, 4.19) will get the ball for the Missions in his first start of 2016. The first-place 'Riders have yet to name a starter.
Notes: The last TL hitter with a three-homer game was Northwest Arkansas' Lane Adams vs. Corpus Christi on August 13, 2013. The Hooks had 10-game winning streaks in both 2006 and 2007 (each occurring in May).
